If Samual Alito is confirmed for the Supreme Court |
|
it will be the final nail in the coffin of our democracy. The USA will soon be turned into a military state.
This is what is coming when BushCo solidifies their control of all three branches of government. This is why the stakes are so high.

...with our freedoms and civil rights at stake, so many Democrats are willing to bend over and take it from Alito with a big smile.
Present company excluded, of course. But remember that DEMOCRATIC Senator Frank Lautenburg introduced Alito to the confirmation hearings.

3. However, Lautenburg did not endorse him |
|
He only did it because it is customary for at least a few government officials from your home state to stand up for you. It seems they couldn't find anyone else so Lautenburg did it more as a matter of duty.
I think this hurt Alito because the talking heads did repeat that Lautenburg was not endorsing him even though he introduced him.

4. Do you ever believe you angered a Chinese person in a previous life? |
|
I have heard it said that there is an old Chinese curse that goes something like "May you live in Interesting Times".

18. do you really believe Alito and the other right-wingers on the court |
|
will support detaining US citizens who simply have political differences at Guantanamo?
Alito is not Hitler.

This is the same Senate that has confirmed Ashcroft, Gonzales, and Negroponte(twice...twice...let me repeat that...twice, by a vote of 98-2), Roberts, and who knows who else(but isn't that enough?).
If...

7. Alito is going to be confirmed. |
|
What we need to do is use his confirmation to galvanize opposition to the entire Republican Party in 06'.

you can forget 2006. The only way we will have a fair and free election again will be to overthrow the government and I think most people are too well fed and sedated to bother.

It's certainly disheartening, but often the darkest hour is before the dawn.

I'm not sure if you are referring to 2008 or 2006, as the elections that were stolen were Presidential ones.
What must happen is that we must win by overwhelming margins, not slim majorities. And we must fight for paper trails and to have every vote counted. Electoral reforms will happen through the legislative branch, not the judicial. I am not so pessimistic as to believe that we cannot win elections in 06', or that all hope is lost.
We have to win overwhelmingly, and I think one thing that will help is as unpopular judicial decisions go down, the people will begin to rise up in larger numbers. Once we have the legistative and executive branches back, the people will have the power irregardless of appointment of Alitio to the court.
Edit: in order to win overwhelmingly both in 06' and 08', the "far left" must turn-out in large numbers irregardless if the candidate is a "far left" candidate. This is as crucial as independent and cross-over voters joining the the cause. If either one of these groups fail to turn out in large numbers, we will fail to regain either the congress or the white house.

13. I was referring to the Nov 2006 elections |
|
I don't see enough going on around the country to make much of a difference in time.
Plus no one is addressing the Absentee Ballot problems which IMHO is where half the fraud takes place. I know repugs in FL who specialize in this sort of thing.

15. Well, all our hopes aren't just riding on one election in 06'. |
|
There will be many, many chances to win more seats.
I think Dean is doing a great job (among other things) and I'm just not as pessimistic. We need electoral reforms, of course. But I don't believe tht cheating is all-powerful. There has always been cheating in politics at the margins. Once we are back in power we will easily pass paper trail laws, address your concerns regarding absentee ballots, etc. :-)

11. I predict that if Scalito is confirmed |
|
we will have a court very much like Germany's in the 1930's. The SCOTUS will provide the 'legal basis' for ** to invade Iran. Within six months of that, we will have WW1 style mobilization of all draftable youth, war economies, and sedition detentions without trial of large numbers of Americans... oh yes, goodbye internet. The Samizdat of 2008 will be the scanner and the laser printer.
Then, when things go completely haywire (the EU, Russia, and China destroying our economy, and most of our troop in the ME) and we are backed into a situation not unlike Iraq in the 90's, we will be encouraged to have a revolt, in which millions of Americans will die, and who knows if the BFEE will be taken down.
Either that, or an asymettrical resistance will arise while everyone in the military is trying to hold the line in Iran and Saudi Arabia.

14. I think that is what they want |
|
be they will never get that far. They do not have the support in the citizenry or the military, nor do they have the resources or manpower to maintain a police state.
They might try to institute a draft but the chickenhawk Repug kiddies want no part of it either.
