How guns are stolen: "Shooting fish in a barrel"

Street guns are often stolen from collectors by thieves with easy access to gun clubs and ammunition logs. And that 770 kilogram safe? A joke to determined burglars

"CONSECON, Ont.—Lionel Weese, a gun collector and tow truck driver, was at home resting his weary feet when the distress call came.

....Snip

Never one to leave anyone stranded, Weese set out to help the stranger, leaving only his tiny dog to guard the arsenal of handguns and rifles he has been collecting since he was 16 years old. His wife was out at her regular Thursday night bingo.

When he found no stranded motorist, Weese began to suspect a hoax. Then came the panicked cellphone call from a friend telling him his house had been burgled.

Weese rushed home to find thieves had kicked in the side door, ripped open his gun safe, and made off with his prized collection of 23 handguns, including five powerful .45-calibre pistols. The Dec. 8 break-in took less than 20 minutes.

6. How's that crystal ball working out for you?
Can you predict the score of the Pats game tonight? I'm hoping you might as you seem to know why Weese collects guns.

dangerous passtime. Perhaps not in the USA where 5% of the gun dealers sell all the illegal guns and get away scot free. But we are trying to do something about a problem. A problem about kids being lost - and taking their whole neighbourhood and all the families there with them.

8. Nope... Just Perpetuating it
through a selfish need to own one. Sure it's pretty and the history behind guns is very compelling, but the end result is always the same, and it's irresponsibility highlights how insane some really are. I see no need for it, whether it be a collection or a paranoid, hiding from commies in East Bumb Fuck.

I fail understand how you came to believe that owning a gun is a selfish act, or that from what little information is presented in the article, that Weese is/was irresponsible. Neither could I find any indication that Weese is "...paranoid, hiding from commies in East Bumb Fuck."

I do however believe that such attitudes cost us many, many votes every election.

They guy was robbed. I fail to see how that is his fault.

12. Nobody has charged him. The point is .. it is the reality. What is wrong
with talking about the reality of guns? And then doing something about it?

13. I've yet to see much reality interjected in this thread.
Edited on Sat Jan-14-06 08:07 PM by Redneck Socialist
Mainly just idle speculation as to Weese's motives for owning guns, speculation that is for the most part derogatory.

The reality, at least as I can determine from the article, is that Weese complied with guns laws in his neck of the woods. As you pointed out the article makes no note of him being charged for violating safe storage laws.

Weese was the victim of a burglary, nothing more, nothing less. Speculating as to why he collected firearms, is just that, speculation. Trying to attach some greater meaning to this crime is IMO equally futile.

In any event I imagine this thread will get kicked to the Gungeon in short order and the usual "guns is bad", "guns is good" suspects will weigh in, and as usual no minds will be changed.

On edit: I'm off to watch the Pat's game so I'll have to pick this up tomorrow. Good night all and GO PATRIOTS!

17. I always think about the insane people driving cars
that don't stop for stop lights and stop signs and have killed more people than people using guns have. I personally think that people are getting to stupid to allow them to drive cars, but I know this is off topic.

4. Lots af press on this guy
little press on the effort to catch the poeople who actually stole his stuff.

People steal explosives, and other things from secured areas.

People stealing is the problem.

5. No - this is a different guy from last week. Someone with a passion for
guns who feels very sad and guilty that three of his 45s are out there and could, may, destroy lives.

he lives in Florida.

19. Lot of press regarding banning handguns and demonizing collectors.
Little (if any), press or talk about some serious hard time for gun thieves and/or criminals caught
with possession of a firearm.

22. DU (nor it's sub-forums), isn't what I was referring to.
Why isn't the Canadian press and/or Parliament looking elsewhere for a solution?

Why is it that the "victim" is the problem and not the perpetrator?

18. GUNS with deadly size bullets suck
we have the technology to make realistic, usable weapons.
The use of guns...especially with bullets larger than .22...
is neanderthal.
Capitalism gone bad again.
