One would think liberals would be a little kinder to |
|
folks who had to dig through garbage to eat and people who had to beg to survive. Just saying... Past few days there have been several threads on homeless/panhandling issues. One would think it was one of the new talking points or something...

1. Did this topic really need a new thread? |

3. Sometimes a reply lost within dozens of others isn't the most effective |

way to get a point across.

8. I get your point, but the thread itself was worth rebutting |
|
It just seems a bit, well, bad form to start another thread about a thread, I've been admonished before for doing it, and I agree its a bit unseemly. Kind of a meta-snark. :D Anyways cheers, and don't go lookin through my trash!!! I eat everything even the biodegradeable bits other DU'ers throw out the window! :toast:

10. This is about the 5th thread on or about the same subject |
|
in as many days. Was just wondering if there was a new talking point out there that was being disseminated. I guess this one is taking the place of illegal immigrants taking everyone's jobs. Who knows.

5. I agree with you. Some people just simply take way too much for granted |
|
and are just inherently selfish.

i have given money to soooo many people that ask me. doesnt hurt, is good to do, is good for my children to see, and fortunately now, i am in a better position to do it.
using a panhandling scam to make a living, fine line difference, but difference it is. now i am not willing to give my money to that person, though i do see it as a job. they are putting in the hours to earn money, thru lie and story telling. none the less, as much of a job as a lot of jobs. i just chose not to give to that person.
cant really even put finger on exactly why.
i have been in our convenience store and people run short, i quickly stand up to pay the rest. i dont think there is once that i have kept mouth shut when a person falls short
i really think the garbage post was on the panhandling. when someone tells me they have run out of gas (and has happened, many times) i want to be confident i am helping someone out that ran out of gas.
just an oddity
but the panhandlers are a different group

11. I feel sorry for those deperate enough to go through dumpsters... |
|

and trash cans around my residence... We're a real dog-loving neighborhood and as one would expect, there are lots of little baggies full of the kind of "gift" one really would NOT want to open... (and I notice a lot of people don't even tie them off, anyway)
Believe me, any poor person who would go to that desperate extreme, isn't looking to violate anyone's privacy!
Bottom line, I'm extremely offended that anyone in this country would NEED to dive through dumpsters or rifle through trash cans just to SURVIVE.

12. Some people just want attention |
|
I guess these types of threads could be considered attention-grabbers. The thing of it is, the subject lines they use are just monstrous. Poor babies need that much attention....

13. Everytime we pass a homeless person with a sign |
|
we give him money. (if we can do it safely) I know I am probably being exploited and he has more than I do in cash. BUT he doesn't have an education, a job..and he probably has a substance abuse problem I have been blessed not to have, as well as a mental disorder possibly.
So I keep doing it. When I was younger and more energetic I kept brown bags full of cookies, change, gum, and a small magazine like Reader's Digest. But I don't do that as much anymore. Really used to piss them off, but I'll bet they ate the cookies!

14. Can't believe I missed all those other threads |
|
I spend enough time perusing this site. I wanted to share something that I have been ashamed of for years. When my girls were young teens we were going into a burger king and there was a beggar/drunk asking for money. I scooted those 4 girls right into BK and gave them a good lecture on how it is wrong to give money to drunks because they will just buy more booze. Man was I self righteous or what? I was also young and believed I was doing and saying the right thing. Due to close family happenings I ended up learning about addictions. I immediately told my then grown daughters about how wrong I was and how judgmental and cruel I was due to a lack of maturity and life experience in that area. I have not felt that much shame again. It taught me a very valuable lesson and I am glad I learned it. I now am a sucker for most anyone down on there luck but mostly I feel good giving a homeless alcoholic some money so they don't suffer withdrawal and possibly die. I say a little prayer to the air that they get some help with their addiction.
