Daily Show is being attacked on Hardball. Actually, I'm surprised that it
has taken this long to happen. If any Democratic idea is uttered on any program, the Republicans will be on it like a chicken on a June bug.

They said some study showed that people who watch the Daily Show are LESS likely to vote blah blah...

Oh well, nice while it lasted.

I say the way they will take care of this little program is to make Jon Stewart an offer he cannot resist and put him on MSM - and therefor muzzle him.

Jon Stewart will be smart enough to see the trap and turn them down. Funny how I trust the character of a late-night comedian more than just about anyone else these days.

8. This attack is in regards to a WAPO article/op-ed
that claims that The Daily Show is a threat to Democracy.

Apparently, The Daily Show must be making progress in their attempts to balance out the repuke sound machine........

21. Yes! We think, therefore, we do not BELIEVE the propaganda
spewed all over the National Television Cable News outlets.

As Yikes McGee would croon, "Propagandy separates the babies from their candy." :P

People who love the satiric themes of Comedy Central, in general, and The Daily Show, in particular, are notably more intelligent and aware of current affairs. Well DUH! :hi:

Jon Stewart, Enemy of Democracy?

By Richard Morin
Friday, June 23, 2006; Page A02

This is not funny: Jon Stewart and his hit Comedy Central cable show may be poisoning democracy.

Two political scientists found that young people who watch Stewart's faux news program, "The Daily Show," develop cynical views about politics and politicians that could lead them to just say no to voting.

That's particularly dismaying news because the show is hugely popular among college students, many of whom already don't bother to cast ballots.

Jody Baumgartner and Jonathan S. Morris of East Carolina University said previous research found that nearly half -- 48 percent -- of this age group watched "The Daily Show" and only 23 percent of show viewers followed "hard news" programs closely.

32. the article doesn't BEGIN to support the hype
the "study" says people who watch the Daily show are more cynical which COULD lead to them not voting. It does NOT say they do not vote even though the article implies that.

Is there a study that says cynical people don't vote? I'm the most cynical person I know and I have never missed an election.

Oh, and while you're there, read the NEXT article in the set: Headlined: Miserly Republicans, Unprincipled Democrats Sounds bad for Dems, right? Read the article, not so. The so called study was based, apparently, on showing people articles on Katrina victims, some black, some white and asking how much you'd give them. Dems averaged $1500 a month for 13 months, Repubs averaged $1200 for 9 months. It doesn't say how that breaks down by race.

Maybe the study shows, but the article doesn't. Is the author nuts or just GOP?

Edited on Fri Jun-23-06 06:49 PM by K-W
And found the MSM propaganda made them more likely to support mainstream politics. Gee golly.

Something tells me this is true of every single show on television that isnt broadcasting MSM propaganda.

Democracy is having real choices at the polls, not everyone watching the same shows and voting for the same people.

people develop "cynical views"? fanfuckingtastic!

what they really hate about this is that it make people too smart to enlist.

The righties are really feeling the threat fromt the left aren't they?

They are coming after the blogs and now the Daily Show? Wow, we've arrived.

This study was done by East Carolina U.? LOL.

This is such crap. People in this age bracket are so much more likely to vote democratic that the right should be glad they might not vote. Desperation is so unnattractive.

Edited on Fri Jun-23-06 05:00 PM by rinsd
I've seen it stated on DU many times. :sarcasm:

A study showing that viewing the Daily Show's dose of satire can make a young person negative about the targets of that satire is hardly surprising.

Here is my problem

""Ultimately, negative perceptions of candidates could have participation implications by keeping more youth from the polls," they wrote."

Yeah it could but many thing could affect participation beyond cynicism.

Edited on Fri Jun-23-06 05:03 PM by emulatorloo
nothing matters, nothing is worth caring about, lets laugh and celebrate apathy, all politicians are the same etc etc

When push comes to shove, Jon Stewart shows his true colors -- that things do matter to him, that what bushco does is criminal. They do some amazing stuff.

but often it is "yeah they all suck, hah hah!"

20. Yeah, but
http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/TV/09/28/comedy.politics/

....<snip>On top of that, "Daily Show" viewers know more about election issues than people who regularly read newspapers or watch television news, according to the National Annenberg Election Survey. (Pop quiz)

Dannagal Goldthwaite Young, a senior research analyst at the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania, said "Daily Show" viewers came out on top "even when education, party identification, following politics, watching cable news, receiving campaign information online, age and gender are taken into consideration."<snip>

<snip>Comedy Central was waiting for news like this. On September 17, Stewart appeared on Bill O'Reilly's "The O'Reilly Factor" only to be told his viewers are "stoned slackers" and "dopey kids."

"You know what's really frightening?" O'Reilly asked Stewart. " You actually have an influence on this presidential election. That is scary, but it's true."

Comedy Central used its viewers' test scores Tuesday to strike back at Fox News Channel and O'Reilly's viewers.

It also trotted out stats from Nielsen Media Research to show that Stewart's viewers are not only smart, but more educated than O'Reilly's.

"Daily Show" viewers are 78 percent more likely than the average adult to have four or more years of college education, while O'Reilly's audience is only 24 percent more likely to have that much schooling.

so he could stay independant.

So now they attack. Jon will stop people from voting.. hide him from your children.. and by the way it now cost $200 to register each new voter in Florida (or something).

The biggest thing creating voter apathy is lack of transparency in elections and with machines. That is all 100% GOP.

31. Sometimes he seems pretty upset. Don't you get that? I haven't seen
it lately.. but 'time of his life' isn't what you see all the time. Sometimes anger, bewilderment, longing, defiance, laughing at the pain Americans are in right now.. cause you have to at times.. to survive.. along with humour and fun.

I think that is why it works. Cause it is honest. And you can connect.

He's independent, gets to laugh, and gets to connect with people -- often at a serious level. How could he ask for more than that? MSM certainly doesn't offer that to us, and couldn't offer it to him either.
