"I pushed about nine months ago to have lobby reform, but nobody really would listen to me...I wanted to do it then because that way it's made much more clear so members don't get into positions like I have." A would-be reformer, now Rep. Ney (R-Ohio) is reportedly close to being indicted for accepting bribes from Jack Abramoff. The irony.

There was much more on this very bad Ney news day...

Jan 16, 2006 -- 09:35:01 AM EST

News broke on Friday that House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) was trying to yank Ney from his position as chairman of a major House committee. But Ney just kept on dancing, even as the hook inched its way across the stage. He wasn't taking Hastert's hints - until the Speaker's displeasure was made public. Now Roll Call reports that Ney will "temporarily" step aside as Chairman of the House Administration Committee (which has jurisdiction over federal elections and lobbying rules), due to the "distraction" his revealed corruption is causing.

Philosophical about his sacrifice, Ney is portraying himself as the Christ of congressional indigestion: "There's a lot of people that are having some heartburn with all the publicity and if they have heartburn I can be the Rolaids."
