I don't "Get" Federal Holidays.
"Get" meaning both ways...(I don't work for the Federal Government or Understand the whole thing.

I mean, if the Law says that the Folks in Government (who we, of course, pay) should receive 10 holidays a year
than why can't a Law be implemented that would designate (force) ALL businesses
to observe the same Holidays.

Don't misunderstand this post..I'm all for giving 10 holidays per year to the working class in this country..
.and paying them for it.
I just feel that it should be across the board.
(If a Sears employee is "forced" to work on Presidents day..FINE..But damn-it ..
They should get paid for it (and of course, still get the holiday pay.

The bottom line is: The Sears employee, as it stands now, is working today to pay for a large share
of the Population to go Fishing..or whatever..That Sucks.

..And No..I don't work for Sears..I just happened to ask somebody AT sears a while ago if they
were getting holiday pay today..Her reply: Are you kidding?

1. I agree. It's the same way in Canada.

Just reinforces the notion of an elitist ruling society.

13. Part Of My Facility Is Union,
But they weren't off today unless they used their one floating holiday. They do have a certain number of sick days too.

4. Christmas is a federal holiday
Can you imagine the federal government telling businesses that they have to close on Christmas? Talk about really crossing the line of separation... But then again, IMHO Christmas shouldn't be a federal holiday to begin with!

8. Does the government tell them that they have to close or is it up
to each state?

Restaurants seem to be able to do what they want but I don't know who orders supermarkets and department stores to close.

5. I like that businesses have freedom to pick their holidays
It's partly a matter of religious and cultural freedom. The Iraqi bakery near me was open on Thanksgiving, which isn't a holiday they had an interest in celebrating. Why should the government force them to lose business on that day? Why shouldn't they be free to close instead on the holidays that have some significance to them?

When I lived in Germany, businesses had staggered "free days", so people could get chores done on their time off from work. So one store might be closed every Tuesday afternoon, the next on Friday mornings, etc. That was a pretty good system, instead of shutting everything down at once. I know when I have a day off, I'm usually using it to try to get chores done, which is a lot harder if the government forces a complete shut down of all business.

If you want to talk about how many holidays an employee should get, that's a different issue entirely - one that ideally unions would be negotiating.

Very True..that is the bottom line.

I suppose I just don't care for the fact that so many people today are working to pay other people to be off..

10. or look at this way ... a lot of people are off, making business for
the people who are working. Its not as if most people who have today off are just sitting at home...many of them are out shopping, or have taken the long weekend to travel...service businesses whose business is dependant on state and federal governments tend to be closed (for example, law firms in DC). But the retail stores, movie theaters, restaurants etc. are open.

9. Today is a slow day at my office because Federal Holidays
mean a lot of my clients are at home or golfing...

So....I think they should be mandatory for all...why not? Life is too short ...we need to have more time for ourselves and families...

11. I don't need any govenrment
telling me which days I will get off and which I won't, especially if I own the business. I'll decide the work schedule.
