I was drafted into the U.S. Army in March, 1953. The Korean War was in full blast. The training unit just ahead of us at Fort Bliss had shipped out to Korea enmasse. We expected to follow suit at completion of our training, however, President Eisenhower was able to secure the cease fire and our unit was scattered all over the world. I never went into combat, but I can imagine the horrors and difficulties of trying to survive in a place like Iraq. None of our people should be there!
I want to commend Elizabeth Dawson for her courage and yes, “guts” for calling this administration to account for the numerous ways it has mishandled this war. Why have our personnel been denied body armor that could have saved the lives of many? Are we keeping it in reserve for the next invasion this president might order? In the early months, many of our personnel refused to travel in trucks that were so worn out and unfit they were afraid they could not make the trips assigned. Vehicles with armor were so inadequate the people who had to use them were forced to reinforce the plate to ensure any element of safety. Is this an army that can fight “anybody, anwhere” and win? Rumsfeld has done very little more than “blow smoke” and President Bush has strutted around like a peacock in his “Napoleonic” fashion trying to impress the world just how “tough” and “bad” he is! Now after we have sacrificed more than 2,000 in death and countless more to physical and mental impairments, we hear from those very people we want to help: “Go home! We don’t want you here anymore!”
Had we elected the devil himself to be president, I don’t believe this nation could be any worse off than under Bush. The national debt is beyond human comprehension. Our economy is very shaky, at best. We have alienated many of our national friends and yet there are still those who say how wonderful the Bush administration is! Some people just can’t learn.
Thank you Ms. Dawson for your input and factual presentations. I have no computer and can’t avail myself to the information to which you refer; however, I trust your comments completely.
Prayers and best wishes go to your son who has fallen victim to the errors of this government. Thank you, young man. May you have a complete and speedy recovery.
