I want to alert you to a health care conference in which I am taking part with my southern California colleagues Reps. Hilda Solis, Lucille Roybal-Allard, and Grace Napolitano. Over 200 people from Los Angeles County and Washington, D.C. are expected to convene in L.A. tomorrow to participate in a forum entitled, Empowering Local Communities, Informing National Policy Makers: A New Agenda To Address Health Disparities.
Many of you are familiar with my work on H.R. 676, the United States National Health Insurance Act, which would create single-payer health care for all Americans. I firmly believe that a lack of access to health care is one of the gravest problems affecting our society. Over 45 million Americans don’t have health insurance and many that do are underserved. Every other developed nation provides health care to its citizens.
I am very pleased to be participating in this conference convened by Congresswoman Solis so that we may address the disparities in access to health care. In addition to the four of us serving in Congress, other participants include AltaMed Health Services, the Coalition to Promote Minority Health, Community Health Councils, and El Proyecto del Barrio. Experts from UCLA, USC, the California Endowment and community health organizations will share their experiences and suggest solutions to tackling this challenging problem.
This is one of many events I plan to take part in across the country to elevate the national consciousness regarding our national health care crisis. Hopefully, some of you may get a chance to attend one of these events and share with us your concerns and suggestions. As always, think of this site as a place you can express your thoughts if we don’t get a chance to meet at one of these events.
