Now I remember why I stopped watching the today show.
I had to stop in a place where it plays every morning, so I couldn't avoid it, but they were talking about causes for obesity. A good number of the reasons they cited were legit...lack of sleep, prescription medication, etc. However, one reason, and the lack of another mind-boggled me. They cited that air-conditioning was a contributing factor...I really don't buy that. If anything, it's a lifesaver at least where I live where it can get nearly as hot as Baghdad in the summer. The thing they didn't mention which is the biggest contributor was big (corporate) food (use of high-fructose corn syrup in everything, etc.).

1. Air conditioning?? Ridiculous. Did they mention high fructose

corn syrup that's found in everything from whole wheat bread to yogurt? Even if you try to eat healthy, most metabolisms respond terribly to this stuff yet somehow it manages to find it's way into everything we eat. I guess it's just easier to blame our obesity problem on air.

The Today Show is disgraceful at informing the public.

2. That's a new one on me as well. I haven't ever heard
that cited for obesity. As a matter of fact, I would think extreme cooling, on the verge of hypothermia, would cause the body to burn more calories trying to maintain body temp.

The Today Show is unreliable for news and current events and allowing politicians to speak freely, unless they are GOP politicians. If you are a Dem, then some obtuse former beauty queen gets to attempt to grill you.

3. Two items that add to weight gain
Yes, corn syrup , but also MSG has been tested in rats or some critters and found to help pack on weight.

The econony of corn syrup enabled fast, cheap, easy fuel for workers of factory and farm. Feed the dumb animals so they can labor effectively.
Always follow the money trail. It works every time.

4. airconditioning makes sense if it means people are sitting in a cool room
and not being active.

But that relates back to not being active.

6. There is logic here
When it's very hot, people tend to lose their appetite. With modern AC, they just keep eating away all summer long. There was an article about it in the news a week or two back.

7. Neo-cons are getting ready to price electrical rates out of the reach
...of the average household. Therefore , they are building a case against air conditioning in homes, factories and offices to cut out yet another expense on the grounds that it is healthier to sweat off all those extra pounds. The U.S. is going back to being a third world country. The new ownership society in which everything is owned by the few and the rest of the people are enslaved to work for the owner elite. (a.k.a fascism)

9. I read something on msn about this study. Supposedly w/o AC, your body
has to burn calories to cool itself. Similarly w/o heat, you shiver to keep warm & burn calories. I don't know if there's anything to that, but that was the writer's argument. But whatever, I live in Florida & I'm not giving my AC up either way.

10. My parents house had no AC and it was no good at keeping people trim
In fact, come july and august, it became SOP to sit around as still as possible in front of a fan. A few years ago we put in some AC and now my mom (nobody else lives there anymore) can even do exercise because it no longer is hot and humid in the house.
