White House misreported flight time of North Korean missile
No. Korea missile flew longer than White House said...

RAW STORY
Published: Friday July 7, 2006

A White House press briefing on North Korea's missile tests misstated the amount of time one missile was in the air, RAW STORY has learned.

In a special press briefing with President George W. Bush's National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley, the announcement was made that "The third was a Taepodong-2 that vanished shortly after launch, less than a minute after launch. That was a failed launch of the Taepodong-2." Press Secretary Tony Snow repeated "The third launch took place from the Taepodong test site, that occurred at 4:01 p.m. eastern time. That was a failed launch; it failed less than a minute into flight."

However, in a report yesterday by the South Korean news agency Yonhap, it has been announced that the missile actually travelled for 7 minutes before falling into the sea.

The Taepodong-2 has been reported as potentially capable of hitting American territory.

The registration-restricted article is available here, and is excerpted below.

North Korea's long-range Taepodong-2 missile travelled for about 7 minutes after liftoff before it plunged into the East Sea, a top South Korean military officer said Thursday.

The North's multistage missile was initially believed to have gone down 42 seconds after it blasted off from its launching pad in the reclusive country on Wednesday, sparking questions over whether the flight was a technical failure or was aborted.

2. They tracked this missile really well.
They had several Aegis ships, both US and JDF and a Cobra Ball on station and they discovered the missile was tracking toward Hawaii. Perhaps that was why they kept it quiet?

3. Top speed of a Taepodong-2 missile would be what 3,000mph...
....8,000mph? So after 7 minutes the range would be between 350 to 1,000 miles. That is pretty significant

4. 7 minutes was probably close to the full burn for the first stage.
I can't imagine it burning for much longer than that.

5. Further than that.
It's a ballistic missile, and only BOOSTS UPWARD halfway to its target.

The SECOND half of its trip is the FREE FALL back down.

Any rocket engineers out there who can calculate from these data the likely distance the missile might have flown over a seven minute period? Please post

6. It lost guidance at 40 seconds
It probably lost guidance at 40 seconds, but continued to go out of control for longer.
