what's this "we" shit?
when "we" do x, it makes "us" look bad.

when "we" do x, fundamentalist christians will vote for bush instead of democratic candidates. . .

and so on.

3. A couple problems with this formulation
1. We are part of a whole. As long as we are all Liberals, what one liberal does reflects on the rest of us. I don't think that needs to be a straitjacket, but it's childish to pretend it shouldn't be a consideration.

2. I don't know how many people are really worried about what fundamentalist christians will do, and I think it's slightly dishonest to frame the question that way (unless you happen to believe that all Christians are fundementalist. People who worry about offending mainstream Americans are worried about just that. The mainstream Christians.

4. I'm a little sick and tired of hearing Repub speakers and pols say,
"The American people think this...." and "The American people want that..."

I a sick of them speaking for ME! If they want to speak for a group then they should say, "The Republican voters and poll takers want this or that!"

I am also sick of hearing how Karl Rove will walk on water if we decide to force a more Progressive policy and issues agenda than the nice safe centrist route.

5. I would agree with that
I am always amused at getting political advice from Republicans. I thought this post was about people at this website.

12. Bryant69, I don't even know you but I bet you don't really mean it
when you say you are "amused at getting political advice from Republicans."

I bet that, by now, you are MAD AS HELL after at least five years of hearing the Republicans get on tv and tell the nation what WE, THE DEMOCRATS, should do, need to do, AND ARE GOING TO DO, while our own dishrag-limp Democratic representatives huddle together like scared mice in a corner,. Maybe you don't want to admit it, but on the real side, I bet you know that shit the GOP is pulling by SPEAKING FOR BOTH PARTIES ain't one damn bit funny! :grr:

On the part of the Republicans, it is pompous, presumptuous, and arrogant for them to tell the American people who the Democrats are going to run in 2008, BEFORE WE HAVE EVEN CHOSEN OUR CANDIDATE. Bryant, if this amuses you, good buddy, then I am scared of you!

Some places in this post are tongue-in-cheek. :)

9. okay
regarding your point number one:

liberals are almost universally reviled as treasonous heathens at best. in some cases, i can almost see a case for some dipshit rw mouthpiece making the case for putting liberals on a par with child molesters.

do you honestly think that anything "we" do as a group will please this element?

insofar as right-leaning moderates are concerned, a progressive would have to become more conservative to win any points. not something i personally am willing to do.

and all of this presupposes that the elections in 2000 and 2004 were not fraught with irregularities and that the majority of people in this country really do prefer dubya's brand of conservatism. that what poses for conservatism nowadays truly reflects the will of the people. this is an idiotic assumption to make if you ask me.

regarding your point number two:

a mainstream christian (sorry, these people are in the minority) would be completely in line with a progressive candidate or progressive ideals.

10. What Tripe
We are universally reviled as treasonous heathens at best? Where ever you live you should move. Cause that sounds pretty damn unpleasent to me.

Alternatively, how far left are you? In favor of an alternative economic system? Or total national pascifism? I mean what belief do you hold that is so hideous that even a moderate would find you despicable?

This has little enough to do with 2000 and 2004 (except in a general sense that we have no hope anyway so we may as well go down as far left as possible).

As for your response to point number two - do you have any statistical numbers to back that assertion up? I find it humorous that you make fun of the idea that 2000 and 2004 prove that most Americans are behind bush and then proceed to make fun of hte idea that there is a significant amount of mainstream Christians. While you are doinhg your other analysis, maybe you should look up exactly how many Americans claim to be Church Going Christians.

7. Bill Bennett - comparing Dems and Repugs:
The Republicans are a more diverse group of Americans with many different voices and opinions (big tent). The Democrats are allowing the far-left wing to control their voice right now, and that's not what the American people want.

There you go!

13. This is just the fcuk what I am talking about!
This phrase: "...that's not what the American people want."

How the f*ck would HE know what the American people do or do not want? Who the hell died and made Bill Bennet God so that he can speak for all of us in America? This is what pisses me off so much that I can hardly sit still when I hear it. And none of our Democratic leaders will speak up about this habit the Republicans have developed during these past five years.

Speak for yourself and your own party, Mr. Bennet!

8. It means ....
Those of "us" who disagree with the direction of the country and support the general principles of this board - Democratic Underground. Picking on the "we" has always bothered me because it assumes "we" don't have values that are all similar as opposed to those "we" are bitching about on the other side........"we" would have to quit using "they" under your logic, and that's a favorite around here and everybody knows who is being talked about.
