"This isn't Fox News, Sir"

It's been a long time since a pithy phrase has been so effective in a debate. In that phrase, Ned Lamont basically described who Joe Lieberman is. Packed into the phrase - "This isn't Fox News, sir", were the following messages:

- Fox News endorsing you is ample evidence that you are not a Democrat
- We're having a debate. This is not a shouting match so quit interrupting me, douchebag
- You may be comfortable on the set with Sean Hannity, but here in reality you've got a fight on your hands

Absolutely wonderful. Go Ned!

Whoever thought up that line should be commended.

Thirty seconds, Mr. Lamont.

LAMONT: You did it with people in the Republican Party when you supported that energy bill. There wasn't one other New England Democrat that supported that bill.

LIEBERMAN: Did you know those two parts that were good for Connecticut were in there?

NESTI: Hold on, Senator, please.

LAMONT: Just let me -- this isn't Fox News, sir. But that was a bad bill, and that was one of the reasons. Another reason is it takes away all Connecticut authority over the citing of a floating LNG, liquefied natural gas facility in the middle of Long Island Sound.

You know, I appreciate your support for ANWR, but let's talk about protection of our sound. I think it was a bad bill because it takes away local control from the state of Connecticut. It did nothing for conservation, and gas prices have gone up accordingly.

7. OMFG--A meme is born!!1!1
We can take down Fox with this one if we do it right. Anytime someone says anything incredibly stupid, you tag it: "What, you think you're being interviewed on Fox or something?"

9. HAH! It'll make those "proud-to-be-dumb" FOX viewer feel validated...
...and stubbornly harden their position, but normal, mainstream Americans (a much larger pool of people) will rightfully be turned even further off of FOX.

13. It shows that Lamont is aware of the cult practices of the corporatists.
Historically, the limiting force on cults has been the ability of the cult leaders to give the members their steady doses of mind control propaganda - an absolute necessity no matter whether it's Jim Jones or Adolph Hitler. It's pretty clear that Fox News is a key component in the Corporatist Cult propaganda machine, even more insidious and pervasive than Rush "Loaner Boner" Limbaugh. To indicate that Lieberman is corrupted by this cult by making the reference to Fox News, Lamont taps into a growing mainstream consciousness of the insanity surrounding us. That it slammed Joe's jaws shut shows how on-taget Lamont was - and how effective it is to drag this shit into the sunlight.

19. Completely agree, TahitiNut! You captured the situation perfectly,
IMO. One of the reasons I've been plagued by discouragement lately is that in spite of the growing amount of criminal behavior, assaults on the Constitution, and general idiocy of this administration being revealed literally week after week for at least the last year, it has seemed like the Republicans and especially this White House have nonetheless pretty much continued along their merry way unhindered.

Even though most Americans finally seem to be "getting it" and to be onto them and fed up with their arrogant, illegal manipulations and outright lies, still the administration continues to get away with further absurd and dangerous violations. It's been driving me past angry and exasperated to near-futility.

BUT -- and I have to emphasize that "but" -- these reports about the Fox news comment by Lamont and what I'm learning about the way it was (and is still being) received gives me a huge dose of HOPE just when I was needing it desperately! I have always thought that if we could just get to the point where the Bushites found themselves being taken to "trial" in a Kafka courtroom every time they opened their mouths to repeat the ridiculous responses they memorize, we'd be halfway there in booting the entire lot of 'em out the door. It's when people laugh at them as simply and patently absurd -- and therefore unbelievable -- that we are truly seeing the beginning of the end for those who have been getting away with far too much for way too long.

Now let's just keep this ball rolling, and I think millions of Americans will start breathing just a little bit easier....

21. The beauty of Lamont's slam-dunk was in the PRESUMPTION
... of something that deserves no argument, i.e. that Faux Nuze is Kult Kabuki. He made the presumption implict in the remark - entertaining no doubt. It's a "water is wet" tactic - don't even tolerate discussion of the point, just assume that any sane person knows it. It's the art of making such implicit references that's a winning style of discourse. Let viewers who're clueless get patiently tutored in private by friends and family and don't waste grown-up people's time with arguing whether the moon is made of green cheese and storks bring babies. Faux Nuze should only be used by sane liberals as the obvious and assumed exemplar of the Corporatist Cult, like Mein Kampf is the exemplar of Nazi self-absorption. Make it iconic, along with a host of other insane frauds.

23. Yes it was beautiful, as you say, because so much is implied in that
little tiny phrase.

"This isn't Fox News" (where you, Joe, are a hero and champion to the Republican Party for selling the Democrats up the river)

"This isn't Fox News" (where the administration party line is promoted 24/7 above all else)

"This isn't Fox News" (where I, a Democrat, can expect to be talked over, ridiculed, have my mic cut out)

etc. etc.

It was brilliant, a "zinger" sound bite, to be sure, but one loaded with REAL MEANING. Bravo Ned.

22. Keith Olbermann just featured it in his program's lead-in.
Lamont scored BIG TIME! Every DUer watching the debate caught it - it didn't take a catcher's mitt. It's great to see it repeatedly jammed down Joementum's craw. Joey-Boy obsessively recycled almost all of history's debate one-liners, trying to twist them for his own cutesy use, from Lloyd Bentson's "you're no Jack Kennedy" to Reagan's "here we go again," and Lamont gets the debate sound-bite prize! I love it!!

25. Omigod! Incredible.
I never paid much attention to Lieberman, but, after viewing just the first part of the debate, one thing emerges loud and clear -- the man is an idiot. He is incapable of anything resembling critical thinking and is addicted to buzzwords or buzzconcepts.

Really. I gave it a shot. But, no go.

If I lived in CT the choice would be quite clear -- Lamont without a doubt!

27. It was wonderful indeed
and good of you to mention it again. I also think it was a gut reaction by Ned, showing he has debating skills. Wasn't sure at first but he pulled through.

There was genuine intensity in his statements as well - he looked Joe square in the eye during a rebuttal, you could sense it.

Are there any polls out that show how the debate impacted the race?

I only saw the online polls showing 80-20 for Lamont.

28. Every Democrat should memorize this paragraph from Lamont
It's important we set a timeline. The Maliki government is asking us to set a timeline. Many members of Congress are asking us to set a timeline. Many Iraqis are asking us to do that. The Arab League is saying, let's set a timeline, let the Iraqis know that only they can solve this. We don't have permanent designs on their oil. No permanent military bases. Let them have a timeframe that they know they are going to step up.

In particular, they ought to be emphasizing, "No permanent military bases." This is one aspect of the argument that is absolutely concrete (pun intended) and clearly shows the Neocon agenda for what it is. They have every intention of occupying Iraq for decades, and the buildings prove it.

Send any spare money you can to the Lamont campaign. This may be the most important Democrat seat we take back this year.
