Sorry to disrupt the goodvibes around here with a pernicious screed, but while I'm still angry, I felt the need to get this down.
I was just listening to the radio and the local rock station is apparently covering the CSNY concert in, what... Chicago, I think. Now I love CSNY even though I'm a GenXer sort... in fact I've got nothing but love and respect for most of the 60's and 70's music scene and I've always dug the unabashedly political views that Neil Young puts into his tunes.
These guys are fan-f'ing-tastic, and I grant them this without reservation. And apparently there's an album out or about to be out with songs like "Impeach the President", whatever.
But then they started "exit-polling" the people at the concert and a couple of them made remarks like, 'it's about time that someone spoke up', and 'why don't the young ones do it, the old guys are stepping up', or some other such nonsense.
It was at this point that my brain became consumed by the fire of rage as, immediately, Green Day, Rage Against the Machine, and System of a Down popped into my head... in fact if I sat down and gave it some thought I could come up with a host of modern bands who are/have been politically charged. Modern bands have been more pissed off than the average bear these days and for A WHILE! Where the hell have you been?
I think my rage stems from the fact that, I believe that, from the vocal tonality and inflection and other indicators, these were older CSNY fans. I hate to drag out the old chestnut of the older generational folks are less than interested in the views of the younger even to the point that they're not even paying attention anymore if they ever did, and I wouldn't do so at all, except for the fact that evidence keeps popping up.
To them, I say: Open your eyes, ears, and mind to what younger people are saying and have been saying for years, as it seems you've got a lot of catching up to do! Christ, even Pink's got a protest song, and she's POP.
Thank you for your patience in these trying times. I need a damn cigarette like nobody's business.
