Rush Limbaugh's Self-Serve Gas Station Ordeal
This morning I happened to hear part of Rush Limbaugh's show on my drive to work. I hadn't heard this guy's show in years, but man- he's even more out of touch than he used to be.

He went on for about 10 minutes about how he had to pump his own gas at a gas station last week. I'm not sure what his original point was, since he started out talking about gas prices- but he slowly meandered into this really sickening whine about having to pump his own gas, and what an ordeal it was. It just got more and more disgusting.

First he complained that he'd pulled up to the pump, and noticed the island that used to be Full Service was now marked Self Serve. So he had to get out of his car (much harumphing here, with comments like "what do I do NOW?"). Then he was exasperated because when he told the woman working the register that he needed gas on pump 5, she asked him "how much?". Limbaugh thought she was an idiot. "How am I supposed to know how much? She's the one with the register".

So then he casually mentions that he just "gave her a $100" and went out to the pump.

He went on and on in this direction. Like he was the only bastard on the planet who ever had to pump his own gas. Like he was some kind of tough guy for having roughed it with the peasants for 10 minutes. He really seemed like he thought he'd gone through something difficult- it was just sickening. I think this moron has been waaay to insulated for waaay too long. No wonder he just ignores drug laws.

he is always talking to them about the $80 apiece Cubans he smokes, the fine dining he enjoys with elite company, the golf resorts he goes to.

Hell, I even remember one time he described how refreshing it was to get out and be among "normal, regualr people, making $175,000 a year" (and they complained that it wasn't enough money).

I couldn't find a full-serve gas station in Cincinnati if I spent three hours searching for one.

Since, I'd say, 1990 or so.

Now, imagining that most of Rush's listeners are simple working folk like me, isn't he showing his stripes with a rant like that? I can imagine working-class wingnuts staring at their radio, saying, "Fuck, I haven't enjoyed the luxury of full service gas pumping since Bush's daddy was president."

every station I go to in my neck of the woods says they won't take anything over a $20 - I'm assuming to keep losses from counterfits down.

And yeah, Rush is a bloviating piece of blubber. At this point I have to work pretty hard to remind myself he deserves some small respect on the basis of supposedly being a human being.

54. I always ask them to mark any bills that I receive in change from them
with that brown pen thing. I tell them that I don't want counterfeit bills passed to me in return. Always gets a laugh.
There's some other device that they feed the bill in like on rollers, and it spits it back out if it's good.
I kind of figured that the brown pen thing and all those other devices were like bogus terror alerts to get your attention, and warned you not to try anything on your own initiative.

88. They have to is you push the issue
(Well they NEVER have to take your $100 bill, they can choose to let you have the gas for free)

Ignoring for a moment the issue of change.

Let say you buy $100 of gas for your big ass SUV, and offer to pay with a $100 bill.

Its legal tender (for all debts public and private), if they refuse the $100 bill then they have refused payment and you can walk out the door...i.e. They cant refuse to take money and then try to press charges that you tried to take gas without paying them money.

I've heard of case where that very thing happened. Clerk refused to take the $50 bill (for like $40 bucks in gas), called the cops because customer refused to offer other payment. The customer waited patiently for the cops to arrive. When the clerk accused the customer of trying to steal (i.e. leave without paying), the cop explained that if they refuse to take money, then they have no cause for complaint. i.e. he told the store to pound sand.

Of course, if you did this alot, it would make buying gas VERY inconvenient.

Me, I just use me debit card and be done with it.

79. "No bills over $20"
That's everywhere now - service stations, McDonald's, etc.

I think it's more that they don't want to make change, which makes sense - when I was in food service you'd get dicks who'd buy a small drink so they could break $100. Hey asshole, how about asking for smaller bills at the bank/check casher? I understand $20s, because that's what most ATMs give. But to carry around C-notes (unless they're for a major purchase or something) is just showing off.

I don't know how many times I've done my own self-serve from my wheelchair in all kinds of weather. Yeah, it's a bitch, but you know what? I have a car. I have money to afford the maintenance. I have money for gasoline. My vehicle is paid for and is in excellent shape. And I'm in great shape for a paralyzed man; I can hoist my dead ass around with the best of 'em.

39. A/B's have all the fun
A/Bs (able-bodied) folks are largely unaware of how easy life is. When I was a healthy young man I never, ever thought about the limitations of {shudder} a wheelchair. I don't even think I saw people in wheelchairs until after I was in one.

I'm on my 26th year in my wheelchair. Things get more familiar but they don't necessarily get easier.

But, hey, you're not mentally crippled, right? Thank the gods we still have our minds....

feels the need and is compelled to brag about it, about how he can afford full serve. I'll bet he is always throwing stuff like that up to the listeners, no matter how much money he has, he's still just a low class pig guy and he knows it.

He also said something like, "I looked at the different grades, not knowing what they were exactly- but I knew I needed the highest number. The best, the most expensive one".

Such an elitist asshole.

between him & the run of the mill ones is that he is obliged to fill time on the radio, so all the personal details get broadcast.
After all, what's the point of having all that money if you can tell people about it?

52. I thought he was and "Expert"
"I looked at the different grades, not knowing what they were..."

And yet, he fully understands why todays high gas prices are "Clinton's fault".

85. Presumably dude used to pump his own gas at one point, like in the 70's,
before he became a world famous and wealthy clown.

I guess time and oxycontin have done their worst and dude doesn't even remember what the grades are all about anymore.

45. He complained about pumping his own gas? What a wimp! I've pumped
my own gas forever. The only time it bothers me is when it's 10 below zero and snowing. That ass lives in Florida, doesn't he? waaaaah! waaaaah! waaaah! WIMP.

55. I heard this too.
The whole point of the story was that he accidentally pumped his own gas because he was at the full service pump when he thought he was at the self serve pump and the moral was "Gas prices are what gas prices are". It was kind of amusing listening to him describe his bumbling at the pump. To his credit though he left a $36 tip to the cashier.

This is great. And they were thinking he was just a regular guy like them. Idiot doesn't even know how to operate a gas pump.

Jesus I've been pumping my own gas since 1976 or 77.

67. Amazingly though most people seem completely able to block out the
unpleasant implications of a "reality check" moment like this, as long as there aren't TOO many of them, and they're spaced out a little.

That's why so many Texans, who generally possess such a strong state chauvinism, and you'd think could spot a fake Texan from a hundred miles, COMPLETELY buy into the myth that Bush is a Texan despite every evidence, on the record and otherwise, that he's a complete phoney baloney, born in CT, prepschooled in Mass, college at Yale and B-school at Harvard, who only pimps his year or two he spent at "San Jacinto Middle School" or whatever when there's an election on.

It's "comfortable" to believe that one of "their own" (white Texan) is in the White House. Any evidence that creeps in that the guy is a total phoney who couldn't give a damn about them is ignored, as long as it happens infrequently and spaced out, so the overall illusion can be maintained.

82. How very true. Still, if many are like me and haven't used full
service in 30 years (hell, it is hard to find one unless you are in Dallas or Houston), maybe it'll make a dent in some thick skulls. Yeah, you are spot on.

Great to see that the newfangled pump technology is beyond him.

I undersand that Self Service is illegal there.

While I would have thought that some like limbaugh would have traveled, I can see where someone who rarely/never leaves NJ/Oregon might get confused if they were out of state.

Still...wat kind of rant is that for a talk show? Getting low on material on i guess.

89. Ewwwwwwwww He had to mix with the peasants. The dittoheads.
Ewwwwwww.

For a moment in time, he had to live life like the rest of us do. Except, he didn't really care that the fill-up might cost him not being able to pay his next mortgage or car payment.

Oh, and where are those little servants that used to fill the Rush-mobile? The local gas stations can't afford to keep them on, Rush! The corps have even figured out that a little automation will elimate their jobs for good.

Just suffer through it, OK?
