If The Founders Could See The Current Mess, What Changes Would They Make?
Edited on Fri Jul-07-06 05:31 PM by DistressedAmerican
What provisions do you think they would have been more explicit about. Any chance they would have added any.

My suggestion: I would suggest an amendment that says once an immediate family member has held the office of president, all others from the family are barred from the office.

Too little power to spread around for individual aristocratic families to be monopolizing it.

Besides, I'd still let them be senators. Seems to have worked our well for both Clinton's and Kennedy's. They should not have too much to bitch about.

3. Maybe a rule that the President is not a member of a
party while in office. Requiring at least some semblance of formal neutrality would prevent a lot of partisanship.

15. You're forgetting the Adamses
Thomas Jefferson broke off years of estrangement with John Adams when he sent Adams a letter of congratulations after John Quincy Adams was elected President.

6. Two more sentence in the 1st.
"...establishment of religion. That means a WALL BETWEEN CHURCH AND STATE Falwell. Got that?"

And an 11th Amendment... Corporations are not people, and the Supreme Court cannot claim they are.

8. Term Limits
For any elected official. Probably 2 4-year terms for president like we eventually got, but also two six-year terms for senators, and five or six two-year terms for reps.

Judges? I dunno, they said for life but the average life expectancy was much less back then. Maybe a single twenty-five year term, then out.

Don't just try and lead by example and assume these people will follow.

If Washington, Jefferson, and Adams saw what was taking place on K-Street today, they'd probably give the U.S. back to England. "You know what, guys? You can have it back."

Some of my suggestions or issues I'd like them to address...
A Constitutional amendment requiring 2/3's congressional approval for SCOTUS appointees rather than a simple majority, and perhaps consider term limits, as they have proved that "they are not angels, but men" and have not been above their political persuasions, so the life term may have failed in its assumptions.

Major constitutional revisions on PACs and political campaign financing...maybe a constitutional amendment that would would only allow funding for political candidates to be paid for equally by all taxpayers, with equal funding for both parties...

I would like them to address the issue of Separation of Church and state... personally, I don't believe that they wanted God out of the picture; just tolerance for individual ways of worshipping God. Atheists, being in the minority, should not be allowed to dictate all so called 'breaches of constitutional law' simply because they disagree that God exists. Our founding Fathers were enlightened men, some of whom had not just belief, but knowledge of God, which is why they established our government as a representational democracy.

I would also like them to consider a constitutional amendment to make English a requirement for voting. If you don't know the language of the country in which you are to cast a vote, It is MHO that you should not vote.

23. Limit war time powers. Grant extra power in war time incourages war..
at least for some presidents.

2) Create national reps in the senate. Too much port being given away. Senate needs a more national view.

IQ matches his belt size, and we almost let a mental patient (Robertson) run. They should have thought about those 2 things.
