COINCIDENCE? 'NY tunnel plot foiled' on anniversary of London transit attacks?
With fundraising for elections in November heating up, it's time to rembember TIME magazine's revelation of "Homeland Security's" explicitly political agenda ( http://www.time.com/time/election2004/article/0,18471,600858,00.html or http://www.zanthan.com/wordsintobytes/archives/001785.html#001785 ).

The timing of today's "NY Tunnel Plot Thwarted" story seems to me a clear reminder of how much Republican electoral strategy entails regularly pressing voters' FEAR buttons.

A google news search just now was unable to come up with a single hit for "coincidence tunnel london anniversary'. How gullible are Americans, and how complicit in Orwellian Republican politics are our "presstitutes"? The closest I could find to explicit skepticism about the latest "thwarted plot" was a report from New Zealand:

From http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,3725746a12,00.html :

"US says foreign-based plot to bomb NY foiled

08 July 2006

NEW YORK: US authorities thwarted a foreign-based plot to stage a suicide bombing of a rail tunnel in New York later this year and three suspects are being held abroad, one of them in Lebanon, officials have said. They said the plot was still in the planning stage and that those involved had not done any reconnaissance or obtained weapons. An FBI official said none of the suspects had ever been in the United States....

The plot was uncovered by monitoring internet chat rooms, the Daily News reported. The report was published on the first anniversary of the London suicide bombings on trains and a bus that killed 52 people. It was the second recent United States threat authorities have said they broke up in the early stages, following the arrest of seven people last month on suspicion of a plan to attack the Sears Tower in Chicago. One official described that plot as being 'more aspirational than operational.'"

What do you think?

2. It's so sad that my first thought when I hear one of these "stories"
is "Yeah, right!" I have a very hard time believing anything about our government reported by the media anymore. I'm always looking for the ulterior motive angle. I hope more and more voters are waking up to the scams this administration perpetrates.

7. The whole half-hour BBC News on PBS today was devoted to the
anniversary of the REAL terror plot that killed 52 people. 52 photos were shown, one for each victim. Imagine how 52 sets of friends and relatives of the London victims will feel when they hear how their tragedy was used to frame a completely cynical political message in NYC today. It's as if Republican pols in NYC and DC took those 52 corpses hostage, to send subliminal messages to American voters.

3. I wonder how many more maladjusted kids and lonely bigmouths...
...are going to end up in jail for life, just because they said the wrong thing on MySpace or in an AOL Group? It seems like all this NSA eavesdropping and FBI spying is aimed at weeding out social rejects and hopeless wallflowers.

5. Seems to me that, under Dubya, loud-mouth dimwits get 20 years for
voicing their fantasies, while people who actually commit acts of terror go scot-free.

Where is Osama bin Laden, heading toward the fifth anniversary of 9/11?

Meanwhile, no Democrat has the spine to call into question the fundamentals of Dubya's "Homeland Security" boondoggle. 9/11 did NOT "change everything". Terrorism is an old tactic, and law enforcement approaches to fight it--taken in most of the rest of the world--remain the best ways to eliminate it, in my opinion.

If no evidence need be "revealed" to put people in jail, if people can be swept up and held indefinitely without trial, then of course thousands of political pawns are going to be arrested and put on display precisely at the most politically convenient times. It seems to me the only really effective antiterror policy for the future, after the people who seized the WH for Dubya have been defeated, is to bring back the rule of law.

Can you imagine what people would be saying if Bill Clinton still were President, and bin Laden still were at large 5 years after 9/11? But Clinton was way too smart to have let that happen.

6. What a coincidence. It's also the anniversary of the tunnel plot.
Apparently, this plot to blow up the Holland Tunnel was discovered a year ago.

The man in jail in Lebanon has been in jail since April, though no year was specified.
