The War for Korea, 1945-1950: A House Burning
Allan Millett

Military historian Allan Millett explains that the basis for the Korean War actually goes back as far as 1910 when Korea was under Japanese rule. This is the topic of his new book, "The War for Korea, 1945-1960: A House Burning." In it, Mr. Millett makes the case that the Marxist-Leninists and the Nationalist-capitalists each sought to control the country with political and military support from foreign powers. The author writes that during the period leading up to the U.S. involvement in the Korean War, thousands of Koreans had already been killed through terrorism and guerrilla warfare, ensuring the split between the two sides.

Allan Millett has written numerous books including "The History of the United States Marine Corps" and "Mao's Generals Remember Korea." Mr. Millett is a military history professor at Ohio State University until 2006, when he takes over as director of the Eisenhower Center for American Studies at the University of New Orleans.

45. It looks good...

From Publishers Weekly
This second collection of Pollitt's columns in the Nation offers more lively and penetrating discussion of political, social and cultural trends from one of the country's finest left commentators and feminist stalwarts. Picking up in early 2001 where her previous collection (Subject to Debate) left off, the 84 taut essays—invariably witty, astute and relentlessly logical—together chart the progress of right-wing policies under the Bush administration before and after the flash point of 9/11, while engaging such urgent and related issues as the attack on abortion rights, the health-care crisis, the rise of the Christian Right, expanding war and militarism, gay marriage and the perpetual "demise" of feminism in the mass media. Selections include perhaps her most infamous essay, "Put Out No Flags" (Oct. 8, 2001)—an account of an argument with her teenage daughter over displaying the U.S. flag at home after 9/11—but there are also dozens of incisive, frequently hilarious gems here. While no conservative interested in public debate should ignore so formidable an opponent, this book will appeal mostly to progressive readers (fans of Barbara Ehrenreich or Molly Ivins are only the most obvious match). "Virginity or Death!" is the title. (Take tour pick, it's already too late for me.) :-) :hi:

The "lockout" segment had a good discussion about immigration, she mentioned how the current economic "problems" are greatly overstated.

Told the story of how in the past recent immigrants had to suffer the idiocy and hysteria of some in certain eras. One German gent in a small town was in the past forced to march down the street waving two little U.S. flags and at intervals in the parade was forced to kiss a big one. The cops put an end to the nutjobbers' pointless and humiliating display.

Crazy m'er-f'ers.
