Old 'Nam Vets
I wonder how many old 'nam vet's can relate to how the times
we lived in are now so much like we are repeating the exact
same thing, even down to the way we talk, is it just me? or is
this De Jevu, or do I need to check in to the nearest VA for
therapy? I sware that this same thing went on in the late 60s
and 70s.

1. Cheney and Rumsfeld are reliving the '70's
The parallels are really quite striking.

However with respect the comparing Iraq and Vietnam the only parallel I really see is that in both conflicts the leadership didn't have the capacity to recognize time to pull out, and "stay the course" was the mantra.

12. Except Vietnam, being pushed by China, was the enemy.
Now both are our 'friends'. Only when it suits them, of course... America thinks it's the best right now, but I worry it's going to get a nasty wake-up jolt within the next year or so.

4. No its not the exact same thing because we actually had
a checks and balance system then and it really worked for the most part..
Congress and the President actually listened to the American people. Today if we disagree we are traitors. Perhaps things are similar but no, not the same, only becasue our Government worked then. For the first time in my life I actually fear that we are actually going to lose our Democracy...
If you need therapy than about 75% of Americans need to get in line behind you.

13. Compared to today
Perhaps they listened after some persuasion..But yes I remember I just forgot.. I guess the government didn't listen..But at least then the protests had a effective impact..Americans weren't hated around the world.

it just wasn't ever intended for us to have any down time I guess, from the looks of things anyway. I had a girlfriend like that once, it was a quickie relationship tho' because we had to have the same disagreements every few days. thanks for reminding me of her.

6. The differences between them make me uncomfortable
Then the anti-war movement was more successful and the media actually covered the war.
Now the protesters are marginalized by the press and herded into free speech zones.
Remember Kent State and how the college campuses all across the country protested the war? now if it were to happen no one would know about it.

14. Reason for mass college protests
was that many students were in schools with a deferment trying to avoid the draft. No draft now.

31. I don't think that was the reason
I think that the young people went through a consciousness raising in the 60s and 70s and they saw the corruption in government and the obvious immorality of the war and wanted to stop it.
I was young then and I know my experience told me that.
To say it was a simple act of selfishness is to blow off the history of an entire generations experiences.

and I burnt my draft card. Most of the marchers thay attended the protests I attended were students at Wayne State in Michigan. Being drafted was a big concern.

I enlisted.

33. Most that i knew had moral reasons to oppose the war
They were horrified by photos of naked children running from a burning village and the police chief shooting a guy in the head... and the Mi Lie Massacre.
But I suppose that there were some that only thought of themselves and could have cared less about the morality of it. We know our resident was one of those.

Just for the therapy bro....We must feed the war machine with our tax money and our poor/young people ...keeping that Iraqi crude in the ground keeps profits up for the rulers not to mention those starving defense contractors.......get with the program trooper... but... I am ready to tell the bush people ,in regard to this country ,to "Love it or leave it"........have a great week end

and no, it's not deja vu, you're seeing exactly the same thing all over again. We've already seen this movie, thanks, and we know how it ends.

Unfortunately, some dimwit has nailed the exit shut and we are stuck here for the duration with all the young fools who believed the crap they got taught in those high school history classes.

11. It makes me sick. I actually hoped our country learned something
from the experience of Vietnam. Not only did we learn nothing, the entire country apparently has
(a) Dumbed down and (b) Lost its collective mind. What else but stupidity plus insanity could explain the B*shit mis-administration? If I could afford it, I'd already have fled this madhouse, seeking refuge in Brazil, pretending to be a Canadian.
