On November 10, 2004, a federal grand jury indicted Republican Linda Schrenko, former state schools superintendent, on charges of stealing more than $600,000 in federal education funds. According to the indictment, some of the money went for her cosmetic surgery, while about half of the stolen money was used for her failed bid for the 2002 Republican primary for governor. Merle Temple, the state's former deputy superintendent and Schrenko's gubernatorial campaign manager, and Stephan Botes, the owner of a computer consulting company, also are charged in the indictment. Allegedly, about $250,000 of the roughly $614,000 was funneled from the companies to Schrenko and Temple and to Schrenko's campaign through cash payments, wire transfers to an offshore account and other disguised transactions. Schrenko's attorney, Pete Theodocion of Augusta, said the former state official denies the charges and intends to plead innocent to the 18-count indictment.
