Illegal immigration is going to go up with Calderon as the new Prez
of Mexico. When are people going to learn that pure free market just causes misery?

1. fantastic, that's just what we need
the wages are too high in the US....we should be helping corporate interests to hire low paid workers. and it doesn't hurt any of us to learn to speak spanish even though english is the language i was taught. i'm a middle-aged baby boomer...why shouldn't i learn a third language at my age.

5. Look, the biggest problems in Mexico today are the lack of jobs.
The impact of NAFTA has been way worse on Mexico then on the US. This has caused a lot of people to go where the jobs are. That means here in the US. Vicente Fox has done nothing to improve the situation and Calderon is not going to either.

A little secret everybody should know. The mexicans in the pro-immigration rallies are HUGE PAN SUPPORTERS! Daaaaaa Taaaaaa!!!!!!!!

Leftists? MY ASS! They are pro-business pro-family and pro-Jesus. Bush is letting them all in ON PURPOSE and I can't wait for the stupid republican voters to figure this out.

6. Um thanks?
I want legal migration to the US because too many people are dying in the desert among other reasons. But having someone who follows the "free market" principles is not going to get Mexico's biggest problems fixed.

7. I half-way agree
But it's not the "free market" that's destroying Mexican jobs. It's the combination of the American & Mexican Corporatocracies working in cahoots to keep wages down. NAFTA was all about allowing Corporate America to use the cheap labor markets of Mexico to reduce labor costs, and then ship these goods back into the United States without paying any tariffs. In addition, it was also about opening up Mexico to even further American capital investment, to improve returns on production via cheaper labor.

This is not the fault of "free markets." It's the result of highly controlled markets, with smidgens of "free market" dynamics thrown in. The U.S. government has subsidized this exportation of jobs through loan guarantees, tax deductions, and overriding of U.S. law to help Corporate America. The only "free market" aspect of this is that Corporate America is "free" to charge whatever price they want for products they produce from subsidization by the American taxpayer.

8. That was precisely why this was so important to Bush**co.
Rovian handprints are all over down there. And that's why. If some wild-eyed populist lefty :sarcasm: like AMLO actually got in, poor Mexicans might actually think they had a future in Mexico. They might even stop heading for El Norte in such large numbers. And that would be the end of immigration as a wedge issue, which has worked so spectacularly well for them so far: witness the donnybrooks we've had about it here at DU, where it's progressive vs. progressive, or at least progressive vs. liberal.
