Clinton slams Bush at King event, says Congress like `plantation'

By DEEPTI HAJELA
Associated Press Writer

January 16, 2006, 6:12 PM EST

NEW YORK -- Sounding a little like a preacher, a fired-up Sen. Hillary Clinton lambasted the Bush administration and the Republican-controlled Congress during a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event, predicting the presidency "will go down in history as one of the worst" and saying the House of Representatives is run like a "plantation" where dissenting voices are squelched.

"When you look at the way the House of Representatives has been run, it has been run like a plantation, and you know what I'm talking about," Clinton, D-N.Y., told the crowd at the Canaan Baptist Church of Christ in Harlem. "It has been run in a way so that nobody with a contrary view has had a chance to present legislation, to make an argument, to be heard."

Speaking to a group of Hurricane Katrina evacuees in the audience, Clinton offered an apology "on behalf of a government that left you behind, that turned its back on you." Her remarks were met with thunderous applause.

"We have a culture of corruption, we have cronyism, we have incompetence," she said. "I predict to you that this administration will go down in history as one of the worst that has ever governed our country."

sense in my opinion. Every appearance is a new chance to make a difference. I think she spoke brilliantly from what I read and within its own context should be praised.

Regardless of past failures of any given dem, they should always be rewarded with applause, approval and keep it ups when they do something appropriate.

3. I am proud of the Democrats today. Very much so. BUT...
Let's see if they can back up their words today with action. If the Democrats are blessed enough to take control of Congress in January of next year, that means they will have the committee chairmanships. They will have subpoena power, etc.

And so I want to know will they get the investigations and impeachment inquiry going.

5. To be heard in the House? They don't even get to read the bills
before the vote at midnight.

It's never been pretty in the House. Somebody once said that the job of the minority in the House is to form a quorum and get a paycheck. But it's never been this bad, because the house is simply another arm of the president.

6. What about the Senate????
"When you look at the way the House of Representatives has been run, it has been run like a plantation, and you know what I'm talking about," Clinton, D-N.Y., told the crowd at the Canaan Baptist Church of Christ in Harlem. "It has been run in a way so that nobody with a contrary view has had a chance to present legislation, to make an argument, to be heard."

All in all, she did good. We need to hear more of this.

8. I Think She Focused On The Lack Of Rights in The House Because
minority status in the House yields literally ZERO power whatsoever, and the arm twisting and corrupt tactics have been far more prevalent there this year. Though the Senate is disgraceful in its own right, at least there is some ability to have a voice, as little as it is. Wouldn't have done any harm though to include the Senate in the statement anyway though :)

But overall, the House has been far more prevalent this year in squashing dissent and any rational voice whatsoever for the most part. I think it is far easier to make the plantation case for the house than the Senate, so that's why she called it out. I'm actually really proud of her, I thought her remarks were great, and hearing on my local news that she infuriated the right is allllllll I need to know :)

Way too late in the game and without any substance. She is a very shallow woman, married to an even shallower man! The name (clinton) should disappear from US political arena very soon or the nation is in for even worse dirt than it is in today!

54. From what I have seen of her speech in this article
I don't understand what "meaningless noises" you are referencing. She seemed right on and played well to her audience. She wasn't doing a State of the Union address, but an MLK day speech

"Speaking to a group of Hurricane Katrina evacuees in the audience, Clinton offered an apology "on behalf of a government that left you behind, that turned its back on you." Her remarks were met with thunderous applause.

"We have a culture of corruption, we have cronyism, we have incompetence," she said. "I predict to you that this administration will go down in history as one of the worst that has ever governed our country."

I want to see more from her and feel many have absolute reason to have had disgust with some of her past statements and inactions, but calling her satan is just overly bitter and dramatic in my opinion.

From what I've read on this speech so far, it appears she did incredible today.

Al Gore still blew this speech away though in my opinion, but that doesn't mean this one doesn't deserve credit too right? :)

One's greatness doesn't have to impede anothers moment of greatness, even if the former was far more effective or on point than the latter.

Hillary cannot shine because of her past five years of Bush-liting. If Hillary really wants to shine, she has to apologize to the nation for abdicating her Senatorial duty by Bush-liting and endorse Al Gore for President in 2008.

Hillary just hasn't been as vocal as she could have been years ago. Every so often she comes out of the woodwork and slams something about Bush, I just find it oddly conincidental that she made this kind of speech the same day that Gore made his speech.

Now with MSM, who do you think that they would be more apt to cover (if they cover either one of them at all), Clinton of course. Just what Clinton was aiming for.
