WASHINGTON -- Federal officials backed off slightly Friday on a requirement for recipients to prove they're citizens before getting health care through Medicaid.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is issuing regulations to exempt about 8 million people from new rules requiring documentation. More...

1. Interesting. I was turned down for my son when I was a temp working
for $9.50 to $10.00 an hour without any other income, a mortgage, and all the other bills that come with trying to raise a 13-year old boy. And I am considering bankruptcy thanks to one particular Sunday when I had TWO massive strokes, one on each side of my brain. Oh yes, and no insurance.

I won't point out the hypocrisy and bullshit of this situation. I know someone else without insurance who does without health care because they can't afford it. Middle aged American born of course.

Oh course soon those who think that now that I have job I should silently pitch in to pay the medical bills for people who are here illegally will be putting in their two cents about how humanitarian this is. Well I say cover all Americans first, then worry about everybody else.

3. pathetic
citizens have to jump through hoops to receive medicaid. the concept of giving it away to non-citizens is appalling. let's take care of ourselves first, maybe even raise the cap on citizens who would be able to receive this benefit.

i'm getting disgusted with this penchant to give away ourt money to rebuild and educate irag while new orleans and its' people languish in despair.

8. So how is it any easier for a non-citizen to get medicaid?
If they don't check, they don't know who's a citizen or not, so they can't give preferential treatment to non-citizens.

Thanks for taking the bait by the way. The U.S., which has the highest per captia GDP in the world, can easily afford to provide universal healthcare for all its residents, but instead the focus here is on the politics of division and scapegoating.

11. My mother died
She couldn't get free medical care and the care she had let her slip through the cracks.

Tell me that is fair when we insure millions for free that don't even belong here

15. Amen
We have enough trouble providing health care to legal American citizens. To ensure that another 6-8 million illegal immigrants get health care on the American taxpayers' dime is insane.

4. I read that medicaid has been available only to citizens for the last 10
years - my husband is a legal resident but not a citizen. He pays into medicaid. How is this fair?

6. I think you're wrong. Also, check the site for your state.
<snip>

Many groups of people are covered by Medicaid. Even within these groups, though, certain requirements must be met. These may include your age, whether you are pregnant, disabled, blind, or aged; your income and resources (like bank accounts, real property, or other items that can be sold for cash); and whether you are a U.S. citizen or a lawfully admitted immigrant. The rules for counting your income and resources vary from state to state and from group to group. There are special rules for those who live in nursing homes and for disabled children living at home.

Your child may be eligible for coverage if he or she is a U.S. citizen or a lawfully admitted immigrant, even if you are not (however, there is a 5-year limit that applies to lawful permanent residents). Eligibility for children is based on the child's status, not the parent's. Also, if someone else's child lives with you, the child may be eligible even if you are not because your income and resources will not count for the child.

<snip>

http://www.cms.hhs.gov/MedicaidGenInfo/

You also have to go to each state site for the rules deciding who is covered. But immigrants who legally entered the country do qualify.

7. here's where I read it:
"For more than a decade, Medicaid has been limited to U.S. citizens, though immigrants - undocumented, or otherwise - are entitled to some emergency medical care. The new rules do not apply to those special cases. "

10. The only proof they were accepting was
a Birth Certificate... Which hospital were you born in? How long ago? Is it still there? Do you have family who can find it for you? Are you of sound enough mind to find it yourself?
If your hospital had had a fire, did you know that you were shit out of luck?

I'm glad they took a step back. The most vulnerable people would have been hardest pressed to supply that piece of paper.

16. This is to protect citizens
But I guess nobody bothered to actually click the link and read.

And citizens would qualify for medicaid if they were getting the same cheap labor pay as non-citizens, so it's just a different group of people we're paying for anyway.

Providing universal coverage has nothing to do with not letting children die or epidemics to spread unchecked.
