Which election is more important and why : 2006 or 2008 ? |
|
Edited on Sat Jul-08-06 11:06 PM by kentuck
I would think that 2006 would be more important because we may not be able to withstand two more years of this type of governing. I know there are folks that say its only a difference in philosophy. Neither the Republicans or the Democrats would do anything to intentionally harm our country. "Intentionally" may be the key word? Perhaps they truly believe all this shit they are doing? Cutting taxes to the bone? Creating historic deficits? Weakening our military? Threatening to privatize Social Security? Cutting any social program that might be of assistance to some needy person?
We will not be able to wave a magic wand and restore everything as it were before. On taxes, social programs, military, whatever. These last 6 years is water over the falls. How much damage can be done in the next 2 years. I would argue that very, very much damage can be done in two years. This may be the last chance to save our country as we have known it?
With that perspective, 2008 should be totally irrelevant at this time. We should devote all our time and energies to assuring that we make the necessary changes in 2006. We cannot wait until 2008. What is your opinion?

1. Equally important...at different times! |
|
For accountability, we must win back House/Senate. For intelligent leadership, we will look to 2008. Unless 2006 produces amazing changes and then who can know?!

2. At the present, 2006 should be our pressing concern, as there is a more |
|
than 50% chance of taking back the House (according to pollsters and my own analysis). Once the House has been retaken and at least 2 Senate seats open or vulnerable are gained in 06 the Party is prepped to do the real deal: 2008. 2008 is more than 2 years away. We have to concentrate on 2006 and retaking the House to get a valuable chance of advancing in 2008. Once the new House has been voted in, then the fun begins...we're going to see some real horse races between then and Nov. 2008!

10. Concentrate on '06 Now (Whether or Not We Can Take the House) |
|
We need to concentrate on '06 to stop the bleeding. We have lost seats every election since 2000. We should consider it a victory if we gain any seats at all. Taking over the House or the Senate would be great, but everything has to go our way for that to happen. In 5 1/2 years, nothing has gone our way. We are succumbing to overconfidence and accepting the Republican framing that victory means taking over at least one House of Congress. If we fail to do that, it will be seen as a great victory for the Republicans. We need to keep up our efforts, but radically reduce our expectations, at least our publicly-stated ones, or even a fairly significant gain for us will still be painted as a "mandate" for more of the Republican sameness.
We also need to concentrate on '06 to protect our potential Presidential candidates from the radioactive glare of the ever-hostile media. Anybody who gets out front this early for the '08 Presidential campaign isn't going to be the nominee. Their negatives are prohibitively high already, and the Mighty Slimeball Media has over two years to drive them even higher.

If we don't regain control of Congress, it won't matter if Fluffy the Goat is president.
Lose 2006, and 2008 won't matter.

6. Both, we need to unit the democratic party sooner than later.... |
|
...and 2006 will provide the foundation and initiatives to do that. We then solidify the issues that will take us into 2008 giving the democrats a much better position to challenge whoever the reThuglicans (a.k.a. Rat Party) come up with for candidate

7. 2006 is more important |
|
because if the Dems control Congress, something can acutally be done about anything the GOP pulls before 2008.

06 is pretty much in the can, with the votes being counted by a few computer programmers. We don't stand a chance.
But by 08 enough people might have finally had enough of the machines and we get a fair election, and of course Dems will win.
But that's only if we have had enough of stolen elections.

9. Worrying about 08 is like trying to pick the price of gas in 08, |
|
Gas prices in Aspen were reported at 4.00. What if gas is at 7.50 by July 08 and rickshaws are the only means of travel and half of the interstate is reserved for people and mopeds? Who will want to run?
Stop with the 08 "what if". Worry about what is right in front of you. Life is series of steps. You can't jump ahead or back. Make a decision and evaluate the outcome.
