Drivers carelessly trapped can be cited

BRAD BRANAN
Tucson Citizen

The state's "Stupid Motorist Law" seems to be little more than a public relations tool for local agencies.
No one has been charged in Tucson in the past three years under the 1995 law, which was created to save lives and reduce rescue costs, though the Fire Department has responded to about 100 reports of vehicles stuck in washes during that time.
"We never publicized that because it would take away the whole media impact," said Assistant Fire Chief Randy Ogden. "If people know it's not enforced, they might not follow it."
It's supposed to work like this: Ignore barricades, get stuck in a flood and face a fine of up to $2,000.
With the monsoon a week under way, more swift-water rescues are expected this summer.
