‘Head of Jesus’ Portrait on Agenda at Harrison School Board Meeting July 18
By HNN Staff
Bridgeport, WV (HNN) – According to Harrison County School Superintendent Carl Friebel, the Board of Education will discuss the issue of the portrait of Jesus in the hallway of Bridgeport High School at the board's next meeting on July 18, 2006. School officials said the portrait has been in the school’s hallway for 30 years, but they aren’t even certain who owns it.
The meeting will begin at 4 p.m. at the Board of Education Office located in the former Kelly Miller High School Building. The public is invited to attend. School Board Member Mike Queen says he anticipates a full update on the issue from the Board's attorney.
Two civil liberties groups sued last week in hopes of forcing the removal of the "Head of Christ'' picture, arguing its presence is an endorsement of Christianity as the "official religion of that school.''
Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the West Virginia American Civil Liberties Union contend the high school is interfering with the rights of all students by violating the Constitution's ban on government endorsement of religion.
The case, filed in U.S. District Court in Clarksburg, was brought on behalf of Bridgeport parent Harold Sklar, and former substitute teacher and parent Jacqueline McKenzie.
