A small example of cut and paste plagiarism by the Associated press:
This was written by a sports writer in Toronto after yesterdays game.

Williams put Toronto in position to go for it with a stellar seven-yard reception. He took a swing pass from Wynn, delivered a brilliant stiff-arm on Winnipeg's Kelly Malveaux, then hurdled cornerback William Fields before being pushed out of bounds.

This was written by the AP:

Williams put Toronto (1-3) in position to go for it with a nice 7-yard reception. He took a swing pass from Spergon Wynn, delivered a brilliant stiff-arm on Winnipeg's Kelly Malveaux, then hurdled cornerback William Fields before being pushed out of bounds.

Now I know it's a small example...buy hey, plagiarism's, plagiarism.

1. I wonder if the reporter in the first instance
also writes the story for AP as a second job or something.

3. Sometimes AP picks up stories from other sources
I know local photographers who's photos go accross AP wires as AP photos.

4. Well, not so fast...
...in the parlance of sports writing, there are ways of describing things that would be common to many writers. I'm just not sure that this limited example proves anything!

5. Also press releases will be sent out to news organizations
and those will be rewritten by local reporters and it's not looked at as plagiarism.

7. I work for a newspaper....
And if this story was sent out to the AP, as most news stories tend to be because just about every news outlet subscribes to the AP, the AP technically has the right to rewrite it anyway they please that doesn't change the facts in it.

8. Probably Not

The writer Dan Ralph works for the "Canadian Press" a newswire and news cooperative service, that's why it's bylined CP in that link. The AP has exclusive rights to distribute CP stories and content to the US.
