S. Korea Wavers on N. Korea Sanctions
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/07/09/AR2006070900184.html

TOKYO -- A top U.S. envoy arrived Sunday in Tokyo to rally a united international front against North Korea's recent missile tests, but cracks were already appearing over a Japanese proposal for sanctions against the communist state.

The visit comes ahead of a pivotal U.N. Security Council showdown over the stern wording of the proposed resolution, which Japan vowed Sunday not to temper _ despite resistance to sanctions from China and apparent wavering by South Korea. snip

In Washington, a top U.S. diplomat said Sunday the Bush administration would resist one-on-one talks with North Korea and insist that other nations in the region participate in any negotiations over its nuclear weapons and missile programs.

"The goal of the current diplomacy should be to use the combined leverage of China and Russia, of South Korea, Japan and the United States to force the North Koreans back to the negotiating table," Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns said.

1. Well don't tell the freepers because I think they will be shocked to learn
that South Korea isn't our bitch and they might have a different agenda and thoughts other than GWB is such a great President.

2. When you have a choice, don't use corporate headlines!
"S. Korea Wavers..."

Not so!

South Korea--with a government that represents the majority of the people--is STANDING UP TO Bush junta bullying! They DON'T WANT a confrontation with North Korea. They don't like this "Axis of Evil" bullshit! They want PEACE with North Korea and have been making their own overtures. Many S. Koreans have relatives and contacts in N. Korea and people are hurting very badly in the north--a lot of sickness and hunger. They want to provide aide. And asshole Bush steps into this with both Nazi boots and makes it all the more difficult--just like they are doing in Iran, by UNDERMINING the significant liberalization trend among young Iranians (also by scapegoating and the creation of bogey-men).

South Korea also has a significant movement against "global free piracy." They have thousands of small farmers who have been ruined by unfair trade. One of them committed suicide at the WTO protests in Cancun in 2003! It is a country, like so many others, that is heading fast toward Leftist (majorityist) government BECAUSE of these bad and predatory big countries trade policies. The people want peace and a decent living. Bush wants another war zone.

"Waivers," my ass. That's like "flip-flopping" and all the other Rovian head-line writing by the war profiteering corporate news monopolies. WaPo probably has investment in N. Korean nuke technology. It is WESTERN-funded and WESTERN-installed! Huge $$$$ contracts. (I can't remember now who it is--somebody like Bechtel.)

Anyway, if you re-post this article anywhere--and you have a choice--the REAL headline should read: "S. Korea Stands Firm Against Bush on N. Korea Sanctions."

3. South Korea has pursued engagement not confrontation.
They actually have to live there, and it seems that they view the North as their cousins, as one people, as Koreans, and are not interested in military or economic aggression as a way to bring the northern regime down.
