Why do they insist that I stand and applaud their war and ignore the lies?
As a free American, born in the mountains of Appalachia, raised on pinto beans and cornbread and biscuits and gravy, why can't I call 'em like I see 'em? I see liars in charge of our government. I see whore whisperers cupping their hands and sharing secrets with each other in the corners of our White House and government buildings. I see young men and women dying and coming home at night to the lonely lights of the runways - no parades and no heroes welcome. I see elected officials standing in front of our press and telling us how democracy is on the march. I see a press on bended knees, with sharpened pencils, breathlessly waiting for the next word to write. And I see fear and concern on the faces of Americans, as they mumble underneath their breath, and the numbers on the gas pumps go exceedingly fast. Should they trust their gut feelings or should they trust their Party leaders? Hesitatingly, they will trust their Party leaders for just a bit longer...just a bit longer.

1. Some are afraid
Bush made them afraid of the "other" at first- but now they are afraid of Bush himself. I talked with a mother whose son suffers from PTSD who has been given drugs but no treatment; he has orders to return to Iraq, and she's beside herself. When I suggested to speak out, she said, "My son says if we do it will go harder for him."

20. But you don't give someone drugs
before they have seen a doctor. From the information the mother gave me, her son was NOT allowed to see a doctor, just given the drugs.

but the military is sending him BACK? That to me is the most outrageous point-and why I was so pissed at the cavalier response from (name deleted).

21. Are you serious?
'Nothing to operate on and fix'. That is an extreme of B/W thinking...... Do some research into PTSD.

I was taught we have in America. Who decides what undermining the country or encouraging the enemy is?

8. A fine line? Indeed it does!

Even if we go to war on lies, an unnecessary war, we are accused of "undermining", just as you say. Well, who the hell are you to say? If we cannot stand up and tell the truth because some shithead is waving and yelling "Love it or leave!" in spite of the lies and the dying. Aiding and abetting who? The enemy or Americans that wish to know the truth? The truth doesn't matter? Who is the enemy here? I'm beginning to wonder?

10. The 1st Amendment gives me the freedom to criticize my government
when I feel it is wrong. In fact, it would be UN-patriotic to stand by and let the Government keep heading down the wrong path, as we have done with Iraq, without speaking out.

It's my DUTY to speak out and criticize in times like these when the President has veered so clearly off course for our country.

That is NOT aiding and abetting the enemy under ANY "law."

15. jefferson
thomas jefferson In a free society with a government based on reason, it is inevitable that there will be no uniform opinion about important issues. Those accustomed to suppression and control by governmental authority see this as leading only to chaos. But a government of the people requires difference of opinion in order to discover truth and to take advantage of the opportunity that only understanding brings.

"Difference of opinion leads to enquiry, and enquiry to truth; and that, I am sure, is the ultimate and sincere object of us both. We both value too much the freedom of opinion sanctioned by our Constitution, not to cherish its exercise even where in opposition to ourselves." --Thomas Jefferson to P. H. Wendover, 1815. ME 14:283

"Nothing but good can result from an exchange of information and opinions between those whose circumstances and morals admit no doubt of the integrity of their views." --Thomas Jefferson to Elbridge Gerry, 1797. ME 9:385

"Truth between candid minds can never do harm." --Thomas Jefferson to John Adams, 1791. ME 8:212

"To those whose views are single and direct, it is a great comfort to have to do business with frank and honorable minds." --Thomas Jefferson to Valentine de Foronda, 1809. ME 12:319

"Men, according to their constitutions and the circumstances in which they are placed, differ honestly in opinion. Some are whigs, liberals, democrats, call them what you please. Others are tories, serviles, aristocrats, etc." --Thomas Jefferson to William Short, 1825. ME 16:96

"In every country where man is free to think and to speak, differences of opinion will arise from difference of perception, and the imperfection of reason; but these differences when permitted, as in this happy country, to purify themselves by free discussion, are but as passing clouds overspreading our land transiently and leaving our horizon more bright and serene." --Thomas Jefferson to Benjamin Waring, 1801. ME 10:235

"I am myself an empiric in natural philosophy, suffering my faith to go no further than my facts. I am pleased, however, to see the efforts of hypothetical speculation, because by the collisions of different hypotheses, truth may be elicited and science advanced in the end." --Thomas Jefferson to George P. Hopkins, 1822. ME 15:394

19. Where's that line? What would you define as aiding, abetting, or giving
encouragement to our enemies?

It wouldn't happen to be the same thing as criticizing this misbegotten president or his misbegotten war, would it?

14. K&R...because what you see is what many of us "see" and
we have nightmares wondering why NO ONE ELSE SEEs what WE SEE! TAKE BACK AMERICA/TAKE BACK OUR MEDIA DIVERSITY FOR FREE SPEECH!

We just have to keep at this...calling attention to it. We wouldn't have freed ourselves from England and George I if we had stayed silent...had not agitated, had not rallied round that "Libery Tree."

16. Hey, Kentuck!
It took me three reads to get through this piece, because I kept going back to the line: "pinto beans, cornbread, biscuits and gravy."

I am now STARVING for that meal!!!!!!

Great article, nonetheless; enlightening, and less fattening.

K'd & R'd!
