Ned Lamott coins great Dem Phrase: "Work for Common Good ...Not
Common Ground!"

I just caught the debate tonight on C-Span...days after it occurred. I've read some DU Discussion about this with some feeling Liberman's experience outweights Lamott's inexperience and some other feeling Lamott did better because he called Lieberman out for being a DINO.

After watching it...I gotta go with Lamott on this one. He used every Progressive Dem Talking Point he could (there were some issues this very lefty Dem might have) but for the most part the CONTRAST with Liberman's old views of how to "work the system" that he defended at great length seemed to contrast with plain spoken Ned Lamott's very nice calling out of why Progressives on the Left just don't think Mr. Lieberman is the "find guy" he wants us to think he is.

But..Best of Lamott was the TALKING POINT: "Dems Work for COMMON GOOD and NOT Common Ground." We Dems have now compromised with the Repugs for two DECADES it's TIME TO CALL A HALT TO THIS!!!!

I thought Lamott crowded his talking points in very agressively and Lieberman sounded "petulant, whiney and defensive."

I think it's a good thing that Lamott is running...and I hope he wins because that Kiss of Joe on the cheek of Bush/Emperor was just too much for most of us Democrats to be able to take after Lieberman threw the election to Bush in 2000 undermining the very Candidate who ran with the FIRST JEWISH CANDIDATE FOR VP in AMERICAN HISTORY!

Joe owned Al Gore alot. He worked for the Repugs. There's something very "smelly" about "Holy Joe." He doesn't deserve re-election for what he's done outside the Senate, IMHO.

1. Seems like a good point
You're title is confusing, though.. ""Work for Common Good ...Not"

It looks like - at first glance that he was saying "Not" about the common good.

10. Sorry...I have bad typo's in post, too. I was rushing and
my post reflects that with the typo's. Lamott said: "Democrats should work for the Common Good and not the Common Ground," in answer to Lieberman's saying his compromising witht the Repugs allowed for more and better jobs for Connecticut. He said he saived the Sub Base in Groton, CT. and other "ear marks" and that was what a Senator needed to do to help their states. Lamott hit him on the International Issues where Lieberman has sided with Bush & Repugs time after time. Lieberman talked about his great Union Support in his 16 years as Senator from CT...not mentioning the job drain from the Northeast to Mexico and now to China and the rest of Asia in his 16 years as Senator. So...Lieberman saved a useless Sub Base to keep jobs while our Military Budget waste in Iraq is THROUGH THE ROOF.

I apologize for posting so fast and not getting back in time to edit typo's...

2. Yes! That was Ned Lamont's
very own phrase that should go down in history and it means something. Where as reagun's "there you go again" meant nothing but there was unholyjoe dredging it up again as if he just watched some ol tape of the reagun/Carter debate.

8. On Lamont
He's right on the money as far as wanting to distance himself from the failed notion of "common ground". Okay, okay, everyone will say, but it worked with Clinton, right? Well, Clinton was Clinton and could sell shoes to a snake. He never was all that much of a demogogue, and rode the Common Ground in much the same way that you ride a particularly docile horse.

But the problem with the idea of a common ground is that it only really works if the two ends of the political spectrum are fixed. Unfortunately, the Republicans have been moving steadily right since the time of Nixon (who would not even be able to run as a Republican candidate for dog catcher in Big Sur, let alone for Preisident). So as the right has moved right, and the left has chosen the common ground and readjusted the definition of left, there's been a creep to the right. Aided and abetted by a very traditional democratic notion to be inclusive rather than exclusionary.

Look, for example, at the Labor government in England if you want another example. Perversely, you could also look at the Conservative government in Canada's gradual slide to the left. The same thing but from the other side.

I know that Lamont doesn't need any money, but I gave him 25 bucks anyway. It just seemed like the right thing to do.

14. Lieberman kept trying to interrupt Lamont while he was talking..
Edited on Sun Jul-09-06 07:09 PM by Ghost in the Machine
just like the shrills at Faux news do, and Lamont looked at him and said "wait your turn, this isn't FOX news" or something to that effect. I don't have the transcript in front of me and can't remember the exact wording, but that's it in a nutshell.

on edit: fix spelling and turn on a light!

11. "Common Good" sort of cancels out Liberman's Compromises
with Repugs for "Common Ground." We all see the Donna Brazilles, Will Marshalls and Bob Shurms (DLC'ers) working for "Common Ground" OVER "Common Good" for America. Anyone who has watched the Bushies and Reagan working for "Common Ground with Dems" has to have chills thinking about how many stolen elections and wars this has cost America and our Tax Dollars spent for WASTE.

So...I thought it was good that Lamott picked up this phrase because it's sure better than "America ...We Can Do Better" which was what the Dem Think Tank/Strategists were trying to ROLL OUT just a few months ago as our "Offical Dem Slogan." :eyes: What WERE THEY THINKING with that one?
