Of circular firing squads and circle jerks
Sometimes we are so busy taking flying leaps and forming circular firing squads, we tend to forget the big picture.

Take Lerkfish's thread for example.

Instead of us laughing at that sorely needed slap at Ann Coulter, several people leapt to the conclusion that Adam Corrola is a celebrated celebrity on DU worthy of God hood.

Which is NOT the point.

So many of us keep missing the point, mainly that Ann Coulter is a fucking joke who needs to be treated and talked to as such. To hell with the messenger.

If it were Karl Rove treating Coulter that way, I still would have gotten a big kick out of it.

2. There are people in the world
that will argue about anything, just for the sake of arguing.

They get like caulk on a blackboard after awhile.

4. AMEN, my friend!
You got that 100% right.

I suspect that many people hear read some other site looking for how they ought to react to events here, and I cannot think of a more stupid oracle to consult.

Rules for getting along at DU and making a difference;

1. Assume goodwill on the part of DUers until proven otherwise.
2. Don't assume they are being dead serious all the time.
3. Assume that ANY Right Winger is criminal scum out to hurt you and those you love, but take cheer when they eat their own.
4. Don't just be part of the keyboard brigade. Get out there and work for campaigns!!!!!

Or maybe pinned to the top of the board.

5. Binary thinking ftl
It's the same type of thinking that leads to a number of things:
* The absolute shitfit over Obama's remarks: He was wrong about the Pledge, but that doesn't mean he's a horrible person or a bad senator; nor does it mean that his remarks were OK because overall he's a good senator.
* The intolerance towards any candidate who isn't 100% pure - the example that comes to mind is a post about Maria Cantwell of WA, although there are dozens of examples (likely hundreds in election season).
* The whole Truthout business.
* The inability to give credit where credit's due when a Republican does anything right.

6. It's significant that Carrola dissed her ass
He agrees with her politics but he sucks up to no one. And he has a following among guys like him. So maybe he'll teach them that it's okay to say:

8. You have to admit...
That there is a sizable segment of the DU population that does tend to lionize anyone they see as advancing our cause or our fight in any way, no matter how big a stretch it is to see them as being on "our side". It would be one thing if the past behavior on DU indicated that it was even remotely possible for people to just enjoy a moment and take it for what it was without having it have to take on some grand significance and requiring us to raise the person involved who we believe to be on our side to sainthood.

Honestly I'm sure it's only a matter of time until the "I'm thinking Gore/Carrola in 2008" posts start appearing.

O.K. that last one was sarcastic hyperbole, but it's also not entirely out of the realm of possibility.

22. I have noticed that every time
Edited on Sun Jul-09-06 11:57 PM by tblue37
someone starts a thread about someone saying or doing something we can approve of, then there will be those who begin to post "So-and-so for president!" messages in response. They obviously haven't got a clue about the person generally, or about whether he or she is really even on our side on most issues. But if the person says or does even one thing we can approve of, it's immediately "So-and-so for president!"

It all seems so mindless and ridiculous.

11. No. You remember in jungle book the disney movie.. the snake..
Edited on Sun Jul-09-06 07:40 PM by applegrove
Kaa...slinks around mesmerizing everyone and trying to eat Mowgli. He is vain, mean, evil, dangerous, and a predator. He tries to then mesmerize the tiger. The tiger falls for it for a second.. and then......SLAP... and the snake is spinning so fast he winds up a tree and chokes himself.

Same thing here. You have to get big enough with these evil freaks to not fall for their shit..crap. Cause their shit will attach itself to you and become yours if you let it.

You have to be big enough to be like the tiger. And the second the bullshit starts.. just slap it to kingdom come.

It is a great moment. And we need our heroes. They teach us how to act.

It was a great moment. And we should all remember it. And the hero who did the slap. And said.. enough of your shit. I will not listen to one second more of it.

13. If coulter croaked tomorrow...
...the broadcast/print networks would find a replcement like her.

So why even focus on Coulter at all? Well, I guess its a lot easier than going against the media conglomerates themselves.

15. No Catwoman no. The reason why it is so funny and so heartwarming
Edited on Sun Jul-09-06 07:40 PM by applegrove
is because by slapping down Ann Coulter.. the host was basically slapping back Karl Rove and all his little minions. All the liars and mystics, all the psychopaths and actors, all the narrators of the Bush Doctrine, all the deniers of reality, all the haters of democracy, all the meanies, the tools, the personality disorders, the sickos, the trough feeders, the creeps, the mesmerizers, the patsies, the people who insult our intelligence and feel contempt for all we hold dear. All of them are organs of Rove and his ilk. Of which Ann Coulter is just one.

It certainly would not be as funny if Karl Rove did it. It is funny because she is just a stand in for Karl Rove. And slapping her and her antics..is slapping him.

Catwoman.. I am surprised at you.

That you don't get it.

It just takes one hero to start a change. To lift people up and lighten their load. And show them the way.
