We have a free local newspaper that covers 2 large "bedroom communities" outside Nashville. Here is the LTTE I wrote, followed by a response from the Edito:
We are Stewards of the Earth.
Most of my Christian friends will recognize that commandment. My non-Christian friends will recognize that it is simply common sense.
Regardless, I recommend that all go see the movie An Inconvenient Truth, or buy the book, or just talk to someone who has seen or read either. I don't care what you think about the man or the politician Al Gore. It is not about him. It is not about politics. It is a MORAL issue. it's about our future, and the future of our children, and our grandchildren.
This is not an advertisement - you can get free tickets by visiting the website
http://inconvenientchristians.org/ . While there, I urge you to read the Christian Times review by David Neff subtitled "With the urgency of a Baptist preacher with a judgment day sermon, the former politician is spreading the bad news of global warming—including in a new film. Christians would do well to listen up". From there, you can also find a link
http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2006/106/34..0.html to another article which quotes the "new coalition called the Evangelical Climate Initiative (ECI) who released a statement signed by more than 85 evangelical leaders.
The statement, Climate Change: An Evangelical Call to Action, says 'human-induced climate change is real,' and calls on the U.S. government to pass legislation establishing limits on carbon dioxide emissions—widely believed to be the primary cause of human-induced global warming.
'Millions of people could die in this century because of climate change, most of them our poorest global neighbors', the statement reads. 'Christians must care about climate change, because we love God the Creator and Jesus our Lord, through whom and for whom the creation was made. This is God's world, and any damage that we do to God's world is an offense against God himself'. "
If you have trouble getting tickets at the website, I'll be happy to take you. The message is that important.
For all the "global warming deniers" out there, Gore points out that the similarities to reports that smoking was dangerous. The tobacco companies funded lots of research that found that smoking was not dangerous. He also points out that in a random study of over 900 peer-reviewed (that means the techniques and results were actually double-checked by other scientists) reports, ALL of them agreed that Global Warming is real and influenced by human beings.
The movie and book also tell us what we can do as individuals, such as using long-lasting spiral flourescent light bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs ( which I did a long time ago just to save money).
But no matter what you think of Gore, no matter whether you see his movie or not, no matter what religion or political party you belong to, you must realize that we are facing serious environmental consequences, and we must demand that our leaders take action.
Because if we are not good Stewards of the Earth, the Earth will no longer support us. Or our children , or our grandchildren.
Here is the Editor's response:
Thanks so much,
I plan on either reading the book or seeing the movie myself, but I think that with the highly charged political atmosphere we have around here right now, this might be a good way to convince others that they should do the same.
YES! GET OUT THE WORD! :bounce:
