Latest from the idiot who still likes Bush
This is what I just got from the fellow who thinks I'M a fool. Responses? By the way, I had him on kill file so he changed his email address.

Sheesh!

Subject: Sen. John Glenn

WHAT SENATOR JOHN GLENN SAID :

Things that make you think a little:

There were 39 combat related killings in Iraq in January.
In the fair city of Detroit there were 35 murders in the
month of January. That's just one American city,
about as deadly as the entire war-torn country of Iraq.

When some claim that President Bush shouldn't
have started this war, state the following:

a. FDR led us into World War II.

b. Germany never attacked us; Japan did.
From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost ...
an average of 112,500 per year.

c. Truman finished that war and started one in Korea.
North Korea never attacked us.
From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost ..
an average of 18,334 per year.

d. John F. Kennedy started the Vietnam conflict in 1962.
Vietnam never attacked us.

e. Johnson turned Vietnam into a quagmire.
From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost ..
an average of 5,800 per year.

f. Clinton went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent.
Bosnia never attacked us.
He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three
times by Sudan and did nothing. Osama has attacked us on
multiple occasions.

g. In the years since terrorists attacked us, President Bush
has liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled
al-Qaida, put nuclear inspectors in Libya, Iran, and North
Korea without firing a shot, and captured a terrorist who
slaughtered 300,000 of his own people.

The Democrats are complaining
about how long the war is taking.

But ..

It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno
to take the Branch Davidian compound.
That was a 51-day operation.

We've been looking for evidence for chemical weapons
in Iraq for less time than it took Hillary Clinton to find
the Rose Law Firm billing records.

It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the
Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard
than it took Ted Kennedy to call the police after his
Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquiddick

It took less time to take Iraq than it took
to count the votes in Florida!!!!

Our Commander-In-Chief is doing a GREAT JOB!
The Military morale is high!

The biased media hopes we are too ignorant
to realize the facts.

But Wait. There's more!

JOHN GLENN (ON THE SENATE FLOOR)
Mon, 26 Jan 2004 11:13

Some people still don't understand why military personnel
do what they do for a living. This exchange between
Senators John Glenn and Senator Howard Metzenbaum
is worth reading. Not only is it a pretty impressive
impromptu speech, but it's also a good example of one
man's explanation of why men and women in the armed
services do what they do for a living.

This IS a typical, though sad, example of what
some who have never served think of the military.

Senator Metzenbaum (speaking to Senator Glenn):
"How can you run for Senate
when you've never held a real job?"

Senator Glenn (D-Ohio):
"I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps.
I served through two wars. I flew 149 missions.
My plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire on 12 different
occasions. I was in the space program. It wasn't my
checkbook, Howard, it was my life on the line. It was
not a nine-to-five job, where I took my tie off to take the
daily cash receipts to the bank."

"I ask you to go with me ... as I went the other day...
to a veterans' hospital and look those men ...
with their mangled bodies in the eye, and tell THEM
they didn't hold a job!

You go with me to the Space Program at NASA and go, as I have gone, to the widows and orphans
of Ed White, Gus Grissom, and Roger Chaffee...
and you look those kids in the eye and tell them
that their DADS didn't hold a job.

You go with me on Memorial Day, and you stand in
Arlington National Cemetery, where I have more friends
buried than I'd like to remember, and you watch
those waving flags

You stand there, and you think about this nation,
and you tell ME that those people didn't have a job?

What about you?"

For those who don't remember ..
During W.W.II, Howard Metzenbaum was an attorney
representing the Communist Party in the USA.

Now he's a Senator!

If you can read this, thank a teacher.
If you are reading it in English thank a Veteran.

It might not be a bad idea to keep this circulating.

Glenn in 08 yes-yes but bush NOOOOOOOO<-- bush

1. Well one glaring error is the date of the Viet Nam war
Edited on Mon Jul-10-06 09:39 AM by nothingshocksmeanymo
Our involvement in Viet Nam began in 1957, not 1962- we first sent troops in 1959

5. First thing I did was go to Snopes.com...
Someone has been playing fast and loose with the transcript!

I Have Held a Job!

Claim: Senate candidate John Glenn delivered a stinging rebuke to a challenger who accused him of never having held a job.

Status: True.
Example: {Collected on the Internet(s), 2000}

<snip>

Update: In 2005, someone prefaced the John Glenn/Howard Metzenbaum article with the following item about Iraq. This addendum has nothing to do with John Glenn — it's an anonymous piece that has been floating around the Internet since 2004, but because it has been tacked onto an article about Glenn, readers have been misled into thinking that it is a transcription of something he said:

6. Here is the reply I sent out on that one:
Has anyone considered checking this information out before they send it out? This email is so full of errors that I don’t know where to begin.

For starters: Snopes: Update: In 2005, someone prefaced the John Glenn/Howard Metzenbaum article with the following item about Iraq. This addendum has nothing to do with John Glenn — it's an anonymous piece that has been floating around the Internet since 2004, but because it has been tacked onto an article about Glenn, readers have been misled into thinking that it is a transcription of something he said:

John Glenn on the Senate floor in 2004? Did he get a guest pass? He left the Senate in 1999.

The Taliban hasn’t been crushed. They are alive and operating in Afghanistan and fighting our troops there. My brother works with a nurse whose son is there, and he’d love to be able to come home. He’s tired of fighting them. We are still losing troops in Afghanistan. Here’s an article from yesterday about the Taliban killing Afghan Interpreters Working for U.S. and Its Allies:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/04/world/asia/04afghan.html?_r=1&n=Top%2fReference%2fTimes%20Topics%2fOrganizations%2fT%2fTaliban%20&oref=slogin

It pains me to read of good Americans comparing the deaths of our troops to the murders of drug dealers in Detroit, as if their sacrifices are the same. I wonder if the children left without their mother or father feels like it is the same? Do we give medals and flags and honor guards to family of those who died on the streets in gang wars in Detroit? At least they can get a pic of their funeral in the paper though. Our slain troops are denied that.

I know there are a lot of smart people in this email loop. The continued occupation of Iraq should be supported (or not) with researched facts and reasonable conjecture about Iraq’s future, not a two or three year old recitation of delusional debunked junk someone made up. Has anyone considered checking this information out before they send it out?

You might consider reading Army Times (http://www.armytimes.com/ ) for info on the military, or if you don’t like reading mainstream media sources.

9. oh, how boring
first off, the fatalities listed in detroit were civilian fatalities, while the ones in Baghdad were military. imagine if 34 cops were being killed every month in a US city.

think about that. imagine what the mayor of New York (much larger than Baghdad) would face if 34 cops were killed a month, while on duty. 34 people in armored vehicles, wearing helmets and body armor and carrying assult rifles were killed in a month.

second off, the civilian death toll is much closer to 1,000 than 50.

10. "On the Floor of the Senate"
Edited on Mon Jul-10-06 09:55 AM by The_Counsel
John Glenn couldn't have said anything "on the floor of the Senate" in 2004. He retired from the Senate in 1999. I could see him being involved in Senate HEARINGS, but those don't usually take place on the Senate Floor.

Oh, and BTW, Howard Metzanbaum left the Senate in 1995. By then, whatever strained relationship he'd had with Glenn had already been cleared up. Come on, people... we don't really need Snopes to debunk this drivel, do we...?

Either your "friend" is an idiot, or he thinks you are. Either way, you should drop kick him in the mouth... :eyes:

But put something in the email that hints that you know he's really still alive.

13. Just a little debunk for the beginning...
Edited on Mon Jul-10-06 10:35 AM by akushuki
According to wikipedia, 43 out of every 100,000 people in Detroit were murdered in 2004.

Also according to wikipedia there are over 140,000 foreign troops in Iraq. So lets say 140,000 US troops in Iraq. As of July 7th 2006 there have been 2,539 American deaths. Its been 40 months we've been in Iraq.

So,

2539 X
140k 100k =

1813.57 deaths per 100k troops in 40 months. So, 1813/40 X 12 = 544 US deaths per 100,000 troops per year.

Makes it seem less safe then this email claimed eh?

I mean, come one. illogic, false facts and spin are so much more enticing and reliable. And that math thingie? Disgusting! That is as bad as teaching evolution to kids instead of real science, ie, Intel Design. Now, apologize for using logic. That is just rude in this day and age.

What a moron.

one random rebuttal: We declared war on Germany AFTER THEY DECLARED WAR ON US! You see, they were allied with the Japanese. When we declared war on Japan, Germany and Italy declared war on us, then we declared war on them.
