2. I saw my first W sticker in a long, long time.
Except, the owner had added a hand made sticker of his own, "No More. . ." in front of it.

I gleemed at the sight.

4. What is the opinion of Kinky here?
Hi:

I was just curious, I'm in Austin and the biggest buzz seems to be about Kinky Freidman. I can't decide what to make of him. He's funny as all get-out. Not sure he really has a chance.

How is he perceived here?

6. Was he?
I didn't realize that.

Forgive me for asking, but I'm new here. Does that really matter? Kinky seems to be pretty liberal, socially. Pro-Gay marriage and all that. Live and let live.

If by some miracle he got elected over Perry (who really reminds me of an actor in a made-for-TV movie playing the role of governor), it would not be considered a 'win' for the Rs.

Personally, I can't stand either the R or D parties. I think they're both corrupt thru and thru.

Someone like Kinky winning would send shock waves thru both parties, I would think . . .

7. Welcome to DU but you mind want to throttle back on the
"Personally, I can't stand either the R or D parties. I think they're both corrupt thru and thru."

This, after all, is Democratic Underground, where smart people come to save our country - through Democratic candidates. Blanket statements that all Dems are corrupt is just so, so,...so, reichwing. Blast away at the repugs if that is your thing, just don't expect a lot of support for statements like that on the Dems. We have enough on our hands fighting that nonsense from the Coultergeists of the world.

9. Ooops, I'm so sorry about that.
Blast away at the repugs if that is your thing, just don't expect a lot of support for statements like that on the Dems.

Oh -- is this for partisans only then?

I'm honestly sorry, I misunderstood. I'll leave ya'll be then.

I was hoping to find some like-minded folks. I'm checking out both L and C sites, just to see if there's anywhere I fit in.

I'm socially L (live and let live, and all that). No victimless crimes, etc. And I'm agnostic, at best. The Rs won't have me for obvious reasons.

But politically, I'm conservative, as in 'careful'. As in 'conservative estimates', etc. The Ds won't have me either.

I'm not even close to Libertarian. I believe in govt funding of common goals (altho I think govt management is the worst way to manage anything).

I do not have any faith in any political parties. I believe if we're going to save America, it has to be thru an end to "team-sports" politics, where if an R does something we condemn it, if a D does exactly the same thing we cheer it.

I believe any 'saving' of American politics will start with getting away from partisanship.

Again, I thank you for explaining it to me. I'll read the posts here, but refrain from posting myself.

Take care.

12. All I'm trying to say is that not ALL politicians - Dems or Repugs -
are corrupt. I especially do not think that all Dems are corrupt. If you honestly misunderstood the function of this site you might want to review the rules about this being a spot for people who espouse the Democratic party ideals.

And just for the record - I'm a Democrat and I am not corrupt. So now you know one and can amend you statement that all Dems are corrupt. (I don't dare speak for all repugs but I have three sons-in-law - all repugs - and not a one of them is corrupt - misguided, wrong, hard headed, yes, definitely - but not corrupt.)

Think you find DU much more open to discussion than a lot of places but I have to listen to people in my area everyday saying how terrible (and corrupt) the Dems are and just don't think I would have to hear that nonsense here.

17. I'm sorry -- I didn't mean to imply all the people are corrupt.
If you honestly misunderstood the function of this site you might want to review the rules about this being a spot for people who espouse the Democratic party ideals.

I'm a System's Analyst by trade. My point is, the system corrupts. Everyone who stays in it for any length of time. People on both sides get money and support by promising to do what the voters want, then using the power and money to help themselves, their donors and their pet causes.

To get elected, you *must* be willing to tell people what they want to hear. You must be for SS reform when talking to young audiences, and against it when talking to older audiences.

Once elected, you *must* be willing to give preferential treatment to the big-whig donors. The system doesn't allow anything else.

To be a party supporter, you must support your team and oppose the other team, even when they both do the same thing.

I am here cuz I'm interested in talking to people who have the ideals. I share most of those ideals (but not all, of course). But I am not really here to support any organization known as a 'political party'.

I'd like to believe that the next evolution in politics will come from here in America. And it will be voting for people, then from day one *not* trusting them. Because I'm a realist about the system. The system is stronger than the individuals in it. The system is designed to beat those reformers within it.

Have you ever seen the British show, "Yes, Prime Minister"?

That is my understanding of how it works in govt.

... though you are not allowed to say so here, there are plenty of folks, present company included, who pretty much agree with you.

The mess we are in is not totally of Republican making, a lot of folks stood around with their fingers up their asses and LET IT HAPPEN.

I'm barely a Dem any more myself, and if things don't change soon, I won't be one either.

We'll be seeing another big test of the Senate as Bush tries to work around the recent SCOTUS decision (Hamdan). If the Dems let this happen, I am done.

8. Go to his website - he's not bad if you look at his stand on the issues.
http://www.kinkyfriedman.com

He's pro-choice, pro-gay equality/marriage, anti-TAKS, pro-healthcare for children, that ain't bad IMO.

It's just so hard for me to shake the image of the pictures I saw glad-handing the Bushes. Worries me.

But then again, in his words, "Why the Hell not?", considering the roster from which we have to choose.

And I have been saying we need a clean sweep, including both parties.

Just those nagging Bush pictures...

I do like most of his positions.

I hope I'm not thinking of voting for him just cuz he makes me laugh! :-)

I'll sit back and see what others think, now. Thanks for the reply.

You are new so you may not know that there are very few things we all agree on here.

You should look at where he stands on the issues you care about and make up your own mind.

My reason for asking how ya'll feel is cuz I'm trying to get an idea of how he'll do, what his chances are. Just my idea of fun!

I found moderate support for him in R land, on R boards. Now I am trying to get a sense of how he's being viewed in D land.

Sorry for any confusion in my posts. On my best day, I'm still pretty scatter brained!

... and say that. I was naive enough to admit signing his get-on-the-ballot petition and admit to it. I was roundly excorciated.

To be fair, the stated reason for the drubbing I got was that he'd "split the ticket". Well, excuse me if, as a Texas who HAS NEVER HEARD ONE WORD ABOUT CHRIS BELL except on this board, I'm not too optimistic about his chances.

And yes, on the issues, Kinky is not that bad.

Thanks for the warning! I didn't realize there even was a Texas forum.

I think I'm just going to finish replying to any replies here, then mostly lurk for a while. I'd love to discuss issues, but I'm 'anti-party' across the board. And if this is a board specificallly for D party supporters, it would be quite rude of me to do that here.

19. This board ..
... is restricted to Democrats and Progressives. You don't have to be a Dem to post here, but if you make a habit of trashing Dems you will be tombstoned :)

My political outlook is similar to what you described above. I'm for freedom, and rights, I'd almost be a libertarian except for their crazy ideas on economics.

I'm more or less conservative on matters economic, but that's only becuase pure Liberal economics is an oxymoron - folks who think you can just raise the minimum wage to $20 and fix everyting are funny.

That said, if you look at the two parties RIGHT NOW, the Democrats are a lot more fiscally sane than the Republicans, who are basically trying to bankrupt the treasury, and will probably succeed.

20. I'll totally agree, right now the Rs are spending like drunken sailors

But as I analyze the system, I'd say the reason is being in opposition.

We get the best govt controls on spending when we have a WH and Congress in opposition. When you have one party control both, then all their pet spending projects pass more easily.

The best results in the past seem to come when we have a D prez and an R congress, unless I've misremembered.

Btw, no offense meant to any drunken sailors! :-D
