A few mentioned race, most did not. I have no idea if this is a valid sample of freeperland opinion, though.

Hopefully, this case will remain focused on violence against a child. Race is irrelevant here.

In this case as in so many others, racial focus is self-propagating. The more race is an issue, the more race is an issue. We have a natural inborn tendency to carve up the world into in-groups (to whom we are blindly loyal) and out-groups (to whom we are blindly hateful). Invoking race is similar to pouring gasoline on a campfire. Everyone gets burned, no one gets warmed.
