A kick in the ass to censors!
"Sanitizing movies on DVD or VHS tape violates federal copyright laws, and several companies that scrub films must turn over their inventory to Hollywood studios, an appeals judge ruled.

Editing movies to delete objectionable language, sex and violence is an “illegitimate business” that hurts Hollywood studios and directors who own the movie rights, said U.S District Judge Richard P. Matsch in a decision released Thursday in Denver.

“Their (studios and directors) objective . . . is to stop the infringement because of its irreparable injury to the creative artistic expression in the copyrighted movies,” the judge wrote. “There is a public interest in providing such protection.”

Matsch ordered the companies named in the suit, including CleanFlicks, Play It Clean Video and CleanFilms, to stop “producing, manufacturing, creating” and renting edited movies. The businesses also must turn over their inventory to the movie studios within five days of the ruling."<end snip>

3. Me too! I even once thought about...
...starting up a company called "Filthy Flicks," where I'd take wholesome, family-oriented movies and add loads of gratuitous swearing and sexual references. It would certainly make sitting through "Uncle Buck" and the remake of "Miracle on 34th Street" a lot more bearable.

Edited on Mon Jul-10-06 04:05 PM by FarceOfNature
it would be like a 2 hour episode of Friends. Or "Indecent Proposal"...it would be like:

RObert Redford: "I'll pay you $1M to um, have dinner with your wife"
Woody Harrelson: "Um, OK, but this IS Demi Moore, you realize. OK whatever, it's your money"

6. New documentary "This Film is Not Yet Rated" drew raves
At the Sundance Film Festival

PARK CITY, Utah - Since 1968, the MPAA Code and Ratings Administration has been an anonymous group enforcing secret guidelines on almost all movies seeking release in America. The difference between its R and NC-17 ratings can mean life or death for a movie. A rating can be appealed -- to another anonymous group, also with guidelines that are never made clear. The board's founder and great defender, Jack Valenti, explained for years that the movie raters were "ordinary parents" with young children, trying to advise other parents on how appropriate movies might be for younger viewers.

11. Just finished reading an article on Current.org

The article was about PBS now covering up the mouth of anyone who swears, not just bleeping the word, so that you can't read their lips, because they're afraid of FCC fines.

Ridiculous.

15. I've been reading "The Republican Noise Machine"

First, fascinating book.

Second, I am currently reading about the "conservative" attack on PBS. It's really amazing how they set out to destroy objectivity in the name of balance.

BTW, thanks for the welcome.

16. A fantastic decision. I know we haven't heard the end of this
Edited on Mon Jul-10-06 05:47 PM by mcscajun
as the parties involved will no doubt appeal the decision.

But DAMN! It feels good. :) They've had this coming to them for a long time, in the category of: "Just WHO the HELL do you think you ARE???"
