OH. MY. GOD.
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/

Let me have your attention for a moment.

There's a brutal, astonishing and final dispatch today from Lawrence Kaplan at the New Republic blog, The Plank. Let me reprint it in full ...

Even by the degraded standards of everyday life in Baghdad, this report from CNN's Nic Robertson comes as a shock:

One international official told me of reports among his staff that a 15-year-old girl had been beheaded and a dog's head sewn on her body in its place; and of a young child who had had his hands drilled and bolted together before being killed.

snip

speechless...

26. Where is the alleged Nic Robertson report? This is third-party rumors.
Lawrence Kaplan at TNR claims that Nic Robertson of CNN reported that "One international official told me of reports among his staff" ...

Where is the alleged Nic Robertson report?
I can't find it.

Kaplan made a direct quote from it, where's the rest of it?

29. the possibility
of this kind of behaviour, exists within every single one of us....- if we try and distance ourselves from the horror of what 'we' do to each other by calling others monsters, or 'evildoers' or 'savages' we aren't fooling anyone- or protecting anyone, least of all ourselves.

Humans can be very viscious creatures. We can also be incredibly kind. I'd sooner encourage the latter.

Perhaps if we TRULY put the kind of energy, effort, money, and brains into seeking ways to make life on this planet better for everyone : illness, famine, discrimination, need, shelter= that we do into finding ways to make war, we'd have less violence, and need to dominate or control?

31. I agree that...
we all have the potential for violence and cruelty depending on the situation that we are in. But come on, do you really think that if you were stuck in a certain situation you would bolt the hands of a 15 year old girl together, cut off her head, then cut off a dogs head, then sow the dogs head onto the 15 year old girls body?

Somehow I ain't buyin' it.

to keep the heads of dead dogs from being stitched to the bodies of dead girls.

You know, so they don't stitch dog heads on to girl bodies over hear.

16. If I had my way in this world ...
... I would force every American who still supports this war to sit in a chair for twenty-four hours while they listened to these stories one by one, while they viewed the photographs and videotapes from Abu Ghraib and elsewhere.

I doubt there'd be too many pro-War types left at the end of the day, and this Administration and its war profiteers would be exposed for what they are, and for what they have wrought.

21. Two years ago, my boy said that
what happened - they'd execute people as a warning and then hang the bodies on street posts as a warning to the rest of the population to do as they wished.

That was two years ago.

In my fathers war - they'd cut off the privates of people and sew them up in the mouths of downed pilots and send them back to the units as a warning. Other things I will not post.

It is all the same, in a way, don't you think??

War is all the same - and this is no different. Sometimes the consequences are worth it, rarely.

This one is sure not!!!

Joe

24. "our guns, our money, and our ideas"....
... are a vital ingredient and yeast for 'their history and their hate'.

And if anyone is naieve enough to think that the same kind of shit could not be written about incidents in AMERICA that are equally as heinous, and perverted they are living in a make believe world- Were America to be invaded by a force equal to what we have wrought in Iraq, and the various factions in OUR nation to be given 'free-reign' i wouldn't want to live 'through' it-

This comment is SO telling in my opinion:

"What I want to focus on is the final, totalizing message -- one that's worth taking note of. You could summarize what Kaplan is saying as, Our guns and our money and ideas are no match for their history and their hate."

Translation? "THEY are savage beasts- who cannot live as civilized people" to which I say- BULL SHIT!! you arrogant asshole-

I agree with the poster who mentions 'meat grinders' and 'incubators'-

This is propaganda- even if some of it IS true- it is meant to distance the US from the responsibility we bear for having unleashed such rage upon a nation unequipped to cope with it, and we have many barbaric and ugly skeletons in our own closets....

30. Not all that surprising actually. In guerrilla warfare....
... leaving civilian corpses in such a way as to demoralize the opposition has a long history. In Nicaragua in the 1980s, Reagan's proxies against the Sandinistas used to do things like slaughter entire families, behead the corpses, and leave the bodies sitting at the dinner table, with the heads on the table in front of the corresponding body. I read about it in a reprint of a CIA manual, and found several corroborating bits of evidence along the way.

Both sides did this sort of thing in the Vietnam war, any vets on the DU can confirm this I'm sure.

It's an inexpensive way to wear down the opposition. Heck, for a Classical Roman example, google "Spartacus" and "crucification", I'm sure you'll find something. And there's always "Vlad the Impaler."
