Stroll with me down memory lane: "Governor blames CLINTON for gas prices"

Governor blames Clinton policies for gas prices

Thompson also takes a shot at Gore while testifying before House hearing

Washington June 28, 2000 - Gov. Tommy G. Thompson used a House hearing on gasoline prices Wednesday to blast the Clinton administration on national energy policy and environmental rules.

"While the administration is asleep at the wheel, consumers are being 'Gored' at the pumps," he said, in a loaded reference to the vice president and presumptive Democratic nominee for president.

Appearing before the House Judiciary Committee, Thompson complained about the failure of the Environmental Protection Agency to grant the Milwaukee area a waiver from the use of cleaner-burning reformulated gasoline.

The committee was one of three House panels exploring gas prices Wednesday.

6. More blasts from the past
REP. TOM DeLAY, Majority Whip: This administration has done nothing to eliminate the problem. In fact, the Clinton and Gore policies are hurling us all back to the Jimmy Carter days, when this great nation was at the mercy of OPEC and their extortion scheme. Even Bill Richardson, Clinton's own energy secretary, has admitted that the administration was at fault when he said that the administration was asleep at the switch.

14. that's actually very enlightening to me...
I didn't get my license or a car until late 2000, so my entire experience (save about two months) as a gas-buyer has occurred under Chimpy McGassy, and I had no real idea just how good everyone had it under Clinton with the gas prices (among other things).

Oh, progdonkey, you could fill 'er up for 15 bucks and just drive and drive and drive.

Environment and everything aside, you never worried about choosing to buy gas or food, or that you couldn't afford the fuel to get to work.

17. The old "The markets will bring down the price" Lie,
Edited on Mon Jul-10-06 09:46 PM by LincolnMcGrath
GARY ROSS, PIRA Energy Group: And the market will lead to lower prices all the time. We expect that OPEC will raise their production. It's in their interest to do so because longer term at this kind of price it's going to bring forth too much in the way of new supplies. It's going to slow down demand growth and inevitably lead to lower prices anyway.

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/transportation/jan-june00/gas_3-15.html

CARL ROSS: Well, there's no question it will work itself out because the market indeed works. And that's what -- supply and demand works. It's not in OPEC's long-term interest to have over $30 oil. It will undermine their position over time.

19. The spike in gas prices came right before the election....
Only in certain blue states...

And the reason given was environmental restrictions on building new refineries...

So, do you think there may have been some colusion and price manilpulation on the part of the oil companies...

And don;t you think they are running up the price of gas as far as it can go to test how much the American public will tolerate....

22. Candidate W on gas prices circa 2000
"We need to use a strong hand in the diplomatic circles to make it clear to our friends overseas that we don't want them holding our nation and our consumers hostage. We expect them to increase the supply of crude oil so that the price of crude oil drops.

25. Bush 2000 would "open the spigots": Clinton's diplomacy "not that strong"
PLANT CITY, Fla., Mar 12, 2000 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- George W. Bush said Sunday he is considering calling for the suspension of a 4.3 cents-per-gallon ``Clinton-Gore'' gas tax hike to combat high fuel prices.

The Texas governor and presumptive Republican presidential nominee also said the administration should be blamed for prices that are approaching $2 per gallon because it has squandered the goodwill built by his father in the Persian Gulf War and has no overall energy policy.

As president, Bush said he would urge Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Mexico to ``open the spigots,'' and remind them of the U.S. role in the 1991 Gulf War and of its economic bailout of Mexico.

``These are countries with which we should have an enormous amount of capital,'' Bush said after visiting the Florida Strawberry Festival. ``These are countries where it wasn't all that long ago that a President Bush helped Kuwait, or a United States helped Mexico, and I think the fundamental question is 'Why not, why can't the administration get anything done in the diplomatic scene?''

He later answered the question, saying of President Clinton: ``I guess because his diplomatic policy is not that strong, his standing in the world is not such that he can call upon our friends when we need them.''

"Bargains" to be had...some places had gas in the high two-nineties!

Reported on a Seattle station this morning.

Of course, we're used to it now. These are the good old days. In two more years, it'll be six bucks per.
