I need help with the posting rules, please.
I want to post an article from my local paper where James Hall, former head of the NTSB under Clinton, really slams Bush. I saw the rules about copying & pasting 4 paragraphs, then providing a link, but that's the problem. The online link to my paper is a subscriber only link.

Thanks in advance,
Ghost

1. Is it subscriber only or registration only?
Some folks will register to read it.

5. it's subscriber only..

13. You might see if news.google.com has the article.
That might provide a useful link, maybe even within
another newspaper.

(Just hoping...)

2. I would say..that
you post 4 paragraphs and if we want to read more we sign up. Usually doesn't take that long.

4. In the past when I wanted to post an article that was not on line
I did it by putting 4 paragraphs at a time in separate posts

8. That doesn't help keep DU out of trouble
The 4 paragraph rule is set up to protect DU from getting sued by news organizations. If the whole article is posted here (whether in one post or in multiple posts) DU could be open to lawsuits.

Just saying.

15. The way I see it
I don't think most newspapers or magazines are going to worry about copyright issues if you at least acknowledge the publication.

18. You are only allowed 4 paragraphs. Posting it in
separate posts = posting the entire
article or a significant part of the
article and that is a rules violation.

6. On LBN
There are strict rules, but in most every other forum the rules are much more tolerant.

Usually, if the originating article doesn't claim otherwise, you can copy the whole thing anywhere here. Just not in LBN.

7. That would violate the newspaper's copyright and
expose DU to legal action.

11. What would?
Ever hear of fair use? When not done for profit, nearly everything in public can be fairly used.

16. From the DU rules:
Copyrights: Do not copy-and-paste entire articles onto this discussion forum. When referencing copyrighted work, post a short excerpt (not exceeding 4 paragraphs) with a link back to the original.

Keep in mind that DU has advertising on it, as do the websites of the newspapers. If you are generating advertising revenue from their copyrighted word, their attornies will be contacting you.

10. You only need a link in LBN
You can write out (or copy and paste) the four paragraphs in any other forum, then summarize the rest in your own words.
Tell where you got the article and it's always good to offer your take on the subject.

17. The rule says a few paragraphs. We ask that you
limit it to 4 or 5 paragraphs. Please
include the link so that members can
refer back to the new source.

If the source is a members only
site, you can just post the link.

I posted it here:

I just wasn't too sure if I had to provide a link or not. I think more eyes need to see this article, or at least the good slam
