In watching the interview for a second time, it was clear that his reference to 9/11 was primarily to show his troops "what it is like when America is under attack", and that's a legitimate point. He did, however, go on to say that fight in Iraq was to ensure that we don't get attacked again on American soil, which of course is crapola. And, as you said, Stewart pointed that out to him.

Then he went into a rather detailed account of returning home to his pregnant wife and while with her at the hospital, wished he were back in combat with his "other family". There was just something about him - something insincere and completely phony. I think he's a sociopath.
