had the military not been purged by the Rummy/bush/cheney gang -- I would suspect that the military would be out front fighting for humane and legal treatment of POWs.
As a military brat -- I really identify with the logic of treatment of POWs.
When I was a kid -- I remember my dad went away for a week for mock POW training -- assuming that the "enemy" wouldn't observe the Geneva conventions while the US military WAS observing the International conventions on treatment of POWs.
At the time the US military (under the supervision of the CIA) was invading the air space of China, North Korea and Russia in active spy flights. So I guess if the planes went down in "enemy" territory the crew wouldn't be POWs -- but spies caught red handed???
But then when the US is the aggressor -- the invader -- and captures individuals (or buys captives) -- boy this really puts a twist upon a twist -- and means that the US is probably in the wrong.
I don't believe that history will look favorably on the current actions of the US administration or the US military.
The mantra that I used to hear -- "well the US is better than . . . THAT" -- the "THAT" meaning the bad behavior of the other country is no longer true. The US is no better than the worst of the worst commie/outlaw nations.
