If you want to learn about current NSA situation read 'The Puzzle Palace' |
|
By James Bamford. They have been doing this stuff for a long time now. The NSA had been spying on U.S. citizens with programs like Project SHAMROCK and Project MINARET from the 1950s to 1975 when the project shut down. Of particular interest are the chapters entitled Penetration,Targets and Fissures. The similarities between the old NSA domestic spy programs and the current ones are jaw dropping. Seriously, if it weren't for the names you would think that you were reading an account about current events. The NSA spy program came to light during the Church Committee hearings during the Ford administration and one of the key players is then and current SecDef Donald Rumsfeld. The same issues are addressed, Ford asserts executive privilege to stifle a Senate committees investigation of the NSA eavesdropping at the behest of Donald Rumsfeld and applies it to Western Union when they are subpoenaed to testify. It is the first time executive privilege has ever been applied to a private corporation in the history of the United States. Seriously if you are at all interested in the NSA domestic spy case and would like a foundation for the understanding of these events read this book.
