Severed pig's head thrown into mosque during prayer session
This has got to be one of the last things I would have thought to happen up here, but I guess every state breeds 'em. It has also caused quite the discussion on a local board, where some of the idiots don't consider this to be a hate crime. WTF? Anyway, here's the article and the link, I know it's from the 4th, but I haven't seen any discussion of it here, so I thought I'd throw it out there and see what the good folks of DU think.

Severed pig's head thrown into mosque during prayer session
July 4, 2006

LEWISTON, Maine --A group of Muslim men praying at a Lewiston mosque were thrown for a jolt when somebody threw a severed pig's head into the mosque. Police arrested a man on Tuesday who said he thought it was a joke.

A frozen pig's head slightly larger than a basketball was rolled into the Lewiston Auburn Islamic Center on Lisbon Street at about 10:15 p.m. Monday, witnesses told the Sun Journal of Lewiston.

Pigs are considered unclean by Muslims, who are barred from eating pork, and the act was viewed as a deliberate insult upon the religion.

"We cannot eat it. We cannot even sit next to someone who is eating it," said a man who identified himself as Omar S.

NOT!!

I cannot understand why people need to stoop to such lows because of their hate for another person or group. Well, honestly, I cannot understand why people hate the way they do!

This action is beyond vile! The very fact that the perps thought it was a "joke" says so much about society in general.

On edit: Had to insert the bold, lest someone think because of my avatar that I was being serious that this is funny. It is NOT!

3. it wouldn't even have to be that extreme!
Two gay men kissing on the sidewalk would set off the fundies! The cool Christians would invite them in. :)

5. Those who do not see this as a hate crime, are both ignorant
and intolerant of other cultures.

Fundamentalist Christians usually meet that criteria

6. This shows ignorance and arrogance
Ignorance if the person really thought it would be taken as a joke, and arrogance if he thought he could 'get away with it' by calling it a joke.

It's not about being forced to follow another's spiritual path; it's about respecting the people who follow that path.

8. Hate crime.
Maine-ah, what are the chances that the authorities take this seriously enough to prosecute?

"The police department doesn't anything like that lightly." -- Good!

:grr:
