you try to commit suicide and when you wake up instead of seeing god, you've got half the FDNY looking down on you.

(Firefighters removed Dr. Nicholas Bartha from his collapsed town house.)

1. Isn't committing suicide against the law?
If so attempted suicide would also be considered against the law. He also should be charged with an act of terrorism even though the White House says it is not.

4. Actually, I discovered it is not illegal to kill yourself in the US

In the U.S. suicide has never been treated as a crime nor punished by property forfeiture or ignominious burial. (Some states listed it on the books as a felony but imposed no penalty.) Curiously, as of 1963, six states still considered attempted suicide a crime--North and South Dakota, Washington, New Jersey, Nevada, and Oklahoma. Of course they didn't take matters as seriously as the Roman emperor Hadrian, who in 117 AD declared attempted suicide by soldiers a form of desertion and made it--no joke this time--a capital offense.

12. that was my first guess. i wonder...
bitter divorce ....

hmm, maybe his plan was to convert the apartment to insurance money and then flee to the caymans with the loot?

if it really was a suicide attempt, did he just use too much gas?

i suspect that he DID intend to destroy the property to keep his wife from getting it.

5. I would think it was OK to do it but not take any one with you
I sort of feel sorry for this man who could not see any other way out of the mess he some what made. It usually takes two to make a marriage work so both maybe to blame in the marriage part. Now I guess they can fight over who gets the land which I bet is worth even more than with the house on it. Spent a week in a hotel in just about that place and it is a real nice place to stay in NYCity.

9. I went to HS
about 4 blocks from there. David Rockefeller lived across the street from the school. It is 'very' nice around there. The land that building was on is probably worth a small fortune.

10. Ouch. You may need to read more about what
he was doing to his wife before you give him the benefit of your concern. Not that everyone doesn't deserve compassion but he was extraordinarily cruel and inhuman to her. A tortured soul who enjoyed torturing others is what I got from reading about him...

13. But do not count her out. Once he was depressed she jumped him
Now I think I really understand that but it is hardly fair even if I have used it.One fights the wars with the weapons one has.
