8. My layman understanding of it is...

they covered their asses very well. They purposely leaked Valerie Plame's name, but since Bush had the ability to declassify her, technically they weren't violating the statute, or at leaset it would be extremely hard, if not impossible, to prove. Then they lied, because that's the only thing they know how to do.

I think they got a little cocky with Fitzgerald though. The fact that he was able to indict Libby and probably came very close to indicting Rove speaks volumes about his abilities as a prosecutor.
