'We have informed some satellite channels that they will be shut down if they continue to broadcast confrontational media announcements, even if they are Iraqi channels, and regardless of which political current they are affiliated with,' he said.

'When I was in Kurdistan (on Tuesday), I declined to respond to a question from al-Jazeera's correspondent and told him that we have taken a stand (against your channel),' al-Maliki said.

'I disapprove of the permission granted by our brethren in Kurdistan that allows al-Jazeera to operate (in the region) as this channel broadcasts inciting, sectarian announcements, day and night.'

Al-Jazeera has been banned from operating throughout the rest of Iraq.

Isn't that Bushco's favorite station too?

2. Further evidence
of Bush's utter contempt for democracy and freedom of the press. What is more is that al-Jazeera is hated by the U.S. government as well as the Arab potentates throughout the Gulf. All the more reason to view them as a resolutely positive force in the world. The more corrupt and evil people you piss off, the more valuable you are to the world.

5. Al Maliki joins the blame-the-media chorus.
Edited on Wed Jul-12-06 10:04 AM by Eugene
Civil war is claiming dozens of lives every day.
The security forces are failing to restore order.
His solution? Blame the press and impose media
and political restrictions.

Freedom is on the march! /sarcasm

6. I guess I'm really stupid but I look at al jazeera every day and
I think they do a pretty good job of covering what is going on in the Middle East. I usually check there first.

I just don't see the slant - they seem to be pretty fair on most issues.
