WaPo: Enron Founder's Memorial Draws Crowd
By KRISTEN HAYS
The Associated Press
Wednesday, July 12, 2006; 3:02 PM

HOUSTON -- Former President George Bush and his wife, Barbara, were among the mourners Wednesday at the memorial service of Enron Corp. founder Kenneth Lay.

The service drew some of the high-profile guests who were close to him before he was convicted in May of fraud and conspiracy for lying to investors and the public about the energy company's financial health before it collapsed in 2001.

Among the other mourners at the downtown Houston church Lay attended for 12 years were former Secretary of State James A. Baker III, Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane Jr., heart surgeon Denton Cooley and Lay's criminal lawyer, Mike Ramsey.

Former Houston Mayor Bob Lanier, 80, collapsed at the service shortly after arriving and was taken by ambulance.

1. Careful
Denton Cooley added ten years to my dad's life. As far as I'm concerned, he is a magnificent human being with a commanding presence who has given a lot of hope and joy to families.

4. You're either with DeBakey and Jarvis, or you're with the terrorists!
I'm kidding.

Cooley is okay, too.

6. I rescind the "crooks" comment as it pertains to Mr. Cooley
It's still applicable to the other mourners, however. ;)

11. You are welcome
If you ever need open heart surgery, come here and see his team. Dr. Cooley is getting old now, but every time I go to the Heart Institute, I see him. EVERY time. He walks into a room and does nothing, but you know you are in the presence of someone so special that it almost feels divine. He even made MY dad behave.

18. I've heard of Dr. Michael DeBakey and Dr. Howard Jarvis, but I have to
plead ignorance when it comes to Dr. Cooley. Thank you for, as we say in D.C., "making me smart"!

Hope your dad is "on the mend" and enjoying life. :)

12. Money, money, money
But Dr. Cooley earned his as "legitimately" I guess as one of the top surgeons to ever live can. Ken Lay gave millions to charitable causes. However, the money just wasn't his to give. Dr. Cooley's work was a charitable cause. I'm speculating that Lay donated money to The Texas Heart Institute.

2. Just making sure he was dead, no doubt
Why wasn't his bestest buddy, the guy he gave so much of his money to, there? With Smirky, loyalty is strictly a one-way street.

3. Lay's body should have been thrown in a dumpster
Edited on Wed Jul-12-06 02:37 PM by bluestateguy
These are the same people who wouldn't even notice if one of the lowly janitors at Enron died, much less attend the funeral.

Today is a day to celebrate, for Ken Lay is no longer a part of this world, meaning the world is now a better place.

I spit on Ken Lay and his memory and his family can all go to hell.

17. Yeah- except they murdered him- takes any of the joy out of it.
I cant rejoice at the fact that anyone was murdered, especially for the reasons they did it.

10. If I were the pastor there, I'd have been on vacation!
Edited on Wed Jul-12-06 05:58 PM by mycritters2
At the very lest, I would have asked that it be held in a funeral home, not the church. And then I would've given my standard "God loves everyone, even (insert name here)" funeral sermon. I can't believe the gushing over this criminal!
