Interviewing for a job...that turns out to be at Freepers R Us |
|
Edited on Wed Jul-12-06 03:55 PM by conflictgirl
As I've posted, my husband has been unemployed since February. He had an interview today for a small company that makes NASCAR-related products. (He's not a NASCAR fan at all.)
He said that as soon as he walked in, there was a HUGE Bush/Cheney poster in the front lobby. And while he waited for the interview to begin, he had to listen to what the company was listening to: Rush Limpball.
In this day and age, and this length of unemployment, I don't think he's in a position to turn down a job if they offer it to him. But seeing as how the entire company is less than 10 people, it would probably be pretty awkward to work there if they offer him the job.
I actually mostly think this is funny, just because it figures that in such a difficult job search, one of his more promising interviews would be for such a place. It sucks that the company's blatant political affiliations would make it uncomfortable to work there for those who don't share the political views, but it's better to know up front, right?
(edited to fix dumb-sounding redundancy :eyes:)

6. Well, he hasn't even gotten it yet |
|
And wouldn't turn it down if they offered it to him. He needs the work too much.
It just figures that when he'd get a promising interview, it would be from there. :eyes: But of course, they aren't guaranteeing full-time hours OR benefits, and the pay isn't great. So if he manages to get it, I'm sure he'll keep looking for something that pays a living wage.

5. I worked for a hardcore repuke and it nearly ruined my life. |
|
He ripped me off in every way and asked me to do many unethical things. Do whatever you must, but working for "the man" can be worse than just having to tolerate their political ideas. You cannot trust people like that and you're counting on them for a paycheck. If they like bush and cheney...they can't be very good bosses.

I worked for a guy that was slightly less ethical than Satan - he encouraged us to cheat customers (through over-inflated shipping, shady tactics, and outright lies), he was rude and racist/sexist, worked us salary types about 10-12 hours a day, AND my damn paycheck bounced more than once (although he always had money to go to the strip bars... grr!)
As soon as I found a good job, I intentionally got myself fired by picking an argument that I knew he'd blow up about, then went home and called Microsoft and OSHA on his ass for the forklift without brakes.
I am so happy to be gone from that place, but I made it a habit while there to collect dirt on him just in case.

17. No, whistleblower. All Republicans are something criminal. |

Just find out what it is. It could be child molesting. They do a lot of that too.

9. At this point, he needs a job! Put politics aside! |
|
I worked for a vitamin manufacturer for years, and I've never taken a vitamin in my life! I remember one of my accountants told me once how he wished we were working for a company that made cam shafts, or mag wheels or something he could get excited about if there was missing inventory! (Yes, it's hard to get upset because you're missing 50 bottles of Vitamin C!
I think that's the way your husband has to go into this job, if it's offered to him. He has a job to do, and he has to be the best he can be at doing it! Small talk can mostly be ignored, and he can always keep looking while he's receiving a paycheck!

I tried to make it clear, but maybe I didn't - he WILL take the job if it's offered to him. His unemployment runs out in a month and I make my living as a freelancer (read: sporadic payment), so we're not in a position for him to turn anything down.
I'm actually far more worried about the fact that the job doesn't guarantee full-time hours or health insurance, than I am by how the company's political affiliations could affect the experience working there.

15. He'd probably be the smartest guy in the firm |
|
Which is, of course, no guarantee that he'd do well or even get any respect from the muttonheads already there, but a suitable mixture of deference, feigned ignorance and just the right measure of correct thinking could result in a very satisfying position for him.
Best of luck to your husband in finding a real job, but if one isn't in the offing, best of luck at this place should they offer him a job. Nothing has to be forever, you know.

......I agree, it's repulsive that these people are so in favor of the administration but here's the bright side. If he does get the job, maybe he could use it to expose them to some more liberal ideas.
Just talking about the price of gas might be a good start.......
