Westchester OEM: Avoid Route 9A/Saw Mill Corridor
(CBS) NEW YORK A tornado touched down northeast of Tarrytown in Westchester County on Wednesday afternoon, causing significant damage.

CBS 2 meteorologist John Bolaris reports witnesses on the ground seeing water spouts as the fast-moving storm headed toward Hawthorne just after 3:40 p.m.

Just FYI, that's about 20 minutes norht of NYC.

I used to spend a lot of time around that area. Good thing it missed the Tappan Zee Bridge. I don't think that thing could withstand a fierce tornado.

They have touched down in both places in the past. The one on Long Island was in Selden near Suffolk Community College a few years ago.

18. Tornado warning is over now
There's a tornado watch in effect still. Stopped raining, but the humidity is terrible. I'm pretty sure a tornado hit Armonk, on Rt. 22 & 120. Lots of trees down there, big ones, and all localized. No damage here in Chappaqua that I can see.

32. Rare, but not unheard of.
I'm in the western part of the state, and we had one some years ago that went over top of my house, tore through some woods, and strolled right up main street. Minimal damage and no loss of life, though. Tornadoes do happen here in NY, just at very infrequent intervals.

37. NBC field reporters were quite "shook up".
One who was near the greatest amount of damage said that she was still nervous because she had either actually been in the tornado or very close to it.

It is not a form of weather condition that we see too often in NY. Turned black outside and scared the shit out of everybody.

57. If she were actually in
a tornado, she would know it.

Turning black is fairly common in any major (tornado producing) squall line.

Tornado's have a LOT more wind speed than even a cat 5 hurricane. Thankfully, they usually aren't very big. However, where they touch, they are absolutely devastating.

59. Sure, you're right! I guess she was close enough to see the
destruction as it was happening. I probably would have been speechless too, if I were in her shoes at that time. She described what she saw when the roof was ripped off of a big company building that had employees inside. Then she pointed out a tractor trailer that had been overtuned several times rolling end over end down the road.

Newscasters are now saying it might have been an F2 tornado with winds of 130mph.

20. Western Mass. is a mini tornado alley
this is not that unusual.
The curious need to google Worcester (very deadly 1950's tornado in a dense urban area, perhaps an F3 to F4) Stockbridge, Great Barrington, Cornwall CT, etc...
There is something about the Hudson River valley which allows torndaos to form and sweep right into the Berkshire hills to very deadly effect.
I'd say there is a big one every 5 to 10 years.

But we never had a tornado! Just lots of thunderstorms.

19. They are saying on the NBC news that is "appears" to be bigger.
Bigger than and F0 or F1. But they have to wait until "experts" arrive at the scene to determine the true strength. I thought wind strength could tell them that.

21. WInd strength is estimated/determined by the damage seen on the
ground. Also, they can tell if it was a tornado or wind storm. Syracuse New York had a bad wind storm on Labor Day about 5 or 6 years back that killed several people camping out at the State Fairgrounds. For some reason, the term "wind shear" comes to mind.

23. Surprise, tornadoes can hit anywhere.
Years ago in the eighties, when Los Angeles was having horrendous El Nino storms, I was walking to lunch with a friend of mine from Kansas.

She looked up into the sky and said, "If I didn't know we were in California, that sure looks like a tornado cloud to me."

We forgot about it but when I got home it was on the news that a tornado had torn up part of the buildings near the Convention Center. Also, that was the year that half of the Santa Monica pier was ripped to shreds. No one blamed a tornado for that but it was a bad windy storm that did, something we weren't accustomed to.

all my life and have never been in a tornado. Being prepared and doing the right things will keep just about anyone safe if there ever is one. With the crazy weather all around, all communities should have warning systems and public service announcements about proper precautions.

I didn't mean to make light of the tornado, but it did tickle me a little that there is such a long thread about it.

45. Glad to tickle you :-)
It's big news for us folks up here! So many people, such congested roadways as it is, so many trees, so many homes and buildings, and nobody is ever really quite prepared for a tornado in this area, because it just happens here so rarely.

The weather service still hasn't confirmed tornadoes, but judging from what I saw on my drive home, I'd say there definitely had to be at least one. My neighbors still haven't made it home, I hope they're OK. Probably stuck in traffic, as so many roads had to be closed for tree damage and electricity outages, traffic lights out everywhere. Some of the traffic lights were even sideways.

The sky turned so black earlier this afternoon, it was really freaky. I'm so glad there was no damage here, I was scared of what I'd find when I got home, but everything's good, I have power, my place is still standing, my kitties are safe, and I can get online.

Flooding here is nearly a daily occurrence these days though - every time we get a heavy rainfall, which is very often this summer, major roadways flood. It's a pain.

I'm so glad you've never been in a tornado. Glad I've never been in one either! Bad enough just to drive through the damage after the fact.

48. Worcester, Mass 1953, 94 dead..... F4
OK- you're being a little naive, and insensitive here, if you think it's no big deal to ride out a tornado, especially a big one.

http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories/s1135.htm .........

Worcester, Mass.: June 9, 1953

The last of the deadly 1953 trio, a massive (F4) tornado, touched down in Petersham, Mass., at 3:25 p.m. (EDT), June 9, and set its sights on Worcester, 30 miles to the southeast. Described as a “huge cone of black smoke,” the funnel intensified quickly and moved southeast at 35 mph. through Barre (two killed), Rutland (two killed), Holden (nine killed) and into northern Worcester, where 60 people died. Cutting a path one-mile wide, the tornado then tracked east from Worcester through Shrewsbury (12 killed), Westborough (six killed) and on to Southborough (three killed).

On the ground for nearly an hour and a half, the Worcester tornado left a 46-mile path of death and destruction. It killed 94 people, injured almost 1,300 and destroyed or damaged 4,000 buildings and hundreds of cars. The damage estimate for this tornado was approximately $52 million ($349 million in 2002 dollars).

The force of this enormous killer carried a huge amount of debris eastward. A music box, a three-foot aluminum trap door and a large piece of a roof were discovered on the grounds of an observatory 35 miles away. Debris was also found in Massachusetts Bay and out in the Atlantic Ocean....

I thought it was that way most every summer.....I spent 6 weeks in ND in June/July 88...and it was hotter than hell the whole time, where my in laws live...in fact, the leaves on the trees in my b i l's yard, dried up and fell off while we were there...if you picked them up off the ground, they were so dry, it sounded as though someone was crinkling cellophane...(never in my life had I ever seen anything like that happen)..there were quite a few 100 degree days...and days that it was 80 by 7am....my youngest daughter couldn't go out of the ac and into the heat, because her nose would bleed...the sunflowers they grow were seriously stunted...all the roadside pools were dried up and white, there were lots of lightning started fires, and horrific thunderstorms.....and tornado warnings..
