Citgo To Stop Supplying Gas To Ohio Stations
Citgo To Stop Supplying Gas To Ohio Stations
Company Based In Houston

POSTED: 1:16 pm EDT July 12, 2006
UPDATED: 1:25 pm EDT July 12, 2006

CARACAS, Venezuela -- Citgo says that over the next year, it will stop supplying gasoline to its stations in Ohio and nine other states.

Owners of those stations will be forced to find other sources for their fuel. While that may create some logistical headaches, the move is not expected to have any impact on the nation's overall fuel supply.

Houston-based Citgo is owned by Venezuela's state oil company.

A spokesman explains that Citgo has had to buy some gas from third parties to keep the pumps flowing at all of its U.S. retailers, but that's not as profitable as selling its own gasoline.

itgo Won't Sell Gas to U.S. Stations

CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuela-owned Citgo Petroleum Corp. has decided to stop distributing gasoline to 1,800 independently owned U.S. stations, shedding a lackluster segment of its business while forcing the owners of those stations to find other suppliers.

While it may create some logistical headaches for gasoline retailers in the short term, the move should not have any impact on the nation's overall fuel supply.

Citgo, which is wholly owned by Venezuela's state oil company, currently has to purchase 130,000 barrels a day from third parties in order to meet its service contracts at 13,100 Citgo-branded stations across the U.S. This is less profitable than selling gasoline directly from its refineries.

Instead, the Houston-based company has decided to sell to retailers only the 750,000 barrels a day that it produces at three U.S. refineries in Lake Charles, La., Corpus Christi, Texas and Lemont, Ill., according to a statement late Tuesday.

7. I'm surprised Washington state isn't one of them...
...since they only seem to be at certain 7-11 locations.

I could be totally wrong, but I think 7-11s are considered CITGO-branded
and this new policy only applies to stations that aren't CITGO branded.

10. Citgo is cutting off collaboration with the multinational oil cartels.
Your excerpt gets right to the essence of this decision. "This is less profitable than selling gasoline directly from its refineries." So Citgo "has decided to sell to retailers only the 750,000 barrels a day that it produces at three U.S. refineries..." It is another step toward independence and self-determination.

8. I got 'em.
They list them in a pdf press release you have to dig around for, but I've got them here.

Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, and South Dakota.
They will also be pulling out of parts of Texas and Rock Island, IL.

They say they're doing it to strengthen their presence on the East Coast and parts of the Midwest they aren't pulling out of.

Citgo in my part of PA has consistently cheaper prices. I'm glad they're staying.

15. So now the conscientious Dems in red states have to buy from
who? Exxon? BP?

What in the HELL do I do with my personal Citgo card? And our small business Citgo card?

We bought from Citgo because buying from Hugo is what we wanted to do...and because we did not WANT to buy from Exxon, BP, etc.

For those of us who have been nothing but boots on the ground in red states, yes this hurts....but most of us have chosen to by only from Citgo based on principle...I think I need to write a letter, not that it will matter, but I will anyway.

2. Apparently production cannot keep up with US demand
So they've had to buy third party gasoline to supply all its stations to make up for the shortfall of its three refineries on US soil.
