Am I foolish to still have faith in America?
Will we overcome this dark period?

At some point will the mechanism of our government triumph over insurgents like bush/cheney?

Will we ever be able to wave the flag again with any possible pride?

Are we done?

Are we watching the death of a nation from within?

Or will America mean something good again?

I have to believe it will.

Am I foolish to believe

1. I don't think it's foolish
It's true, things don't look good now. And I don't really have any concrete signs to point to indicating that someday it will turn around, other than the fact that there have been other times in this country's history when things looked as bad or worse, and things turned around.

I have to believe it will get better someday. To completely lose faith in it would be incredibly depressing, so I'm not there yet.

4. NO!!! Here's a PM I sent to another DUer
I don't know your age or race

Doesn't matter. It took the Pukes 50 years to take power,
and 8 to F it up. As Randi says, "If it's not close, they
can't steal it". Believe me, sometimes I feel like just saying
"F it" and living out the rest of my life just doing my job.

But I can't, and you can't. The Founding Fathers were, in their
day, very wealthy people. But they pledged "Our Lives, Our Fortunes
and Our Sacred Honor" to give us this Republic.

Most of the signers of the Declaration of Independence didn't live
to see the founding of our Country. They gave their lives for an
experiment. We're that experiment. It's up to us to see that it
works.

Peace and love,

R**

14. They Only Have to Make The Mighty Slime Machine SAY It's Close
In Ohio, they don't even have to bother with that.
They can just make up any results they want, as
we saw last November.

Same in Georgia and Florida.

15. OK, the gloves are off
Lets get our fucking asses off our comfy couches and
FIGHT FOR OUR GODDAMNED COUNTRY!!!

The FF's did, and paid a goddamned awful price to give
us this Country. If we're not willing to do the same,
then we deserve to be fucking slaves.

16. They're Being Fucking Lied to By the Fucking Media
As long as the media cooperates in the theft by making up
plausible stories to explain away every Republican upset,
most people WILL NOT BELIEVE that the elections are being stolen.

19. Point taken
Sorry about the delay-what with my job.
Thing is, we can't let them win. It may
take some time, and, yes, some sacrifice
of wealth-and dare I say it lives. If that
be the case, then so be it. I'll be proud to
join those unsung Patriots who gave their lives
so that I can send this massage.

6. Why not? the only thing that has really changed here is the fools
in charge let the mask slip and we've been allowed to catch a glimpse of how really ugly we are. We've been fucking-over most of the rest of the world for a very long time, we've just been able to ignore it until recently.

9. True -
Edited on Thu Jul-13-06 12:50 AM by libhill
Iraq is not our first ill advised overseas adventure. People tend to forget the conquest of the Philippines, which even Teddy Roosevelt was to admit later in his life, had been a mistake, as the islands were too far away from the mainland to be easily defended if ever attacked by Japan. Which prediction proved to be eerily true. They forget our incursions into Nicaragua, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Russia during World War 1, ("the American Siberian Expeditionary Force"), the list goes on and on. As you say, we have been consistently sticking our nose in where it doesn't belong for at least the last 100 years. Under both Democratic and Republican Administrations. But we survived. And I firmly believe that we'll survive the Bush years too... or am I being overly optimistic myself?

But this is the final gasp of what was America and is now the amerikan empire.

7. First .... It is about Steely-Eyed determination .. NOT 'faith' ...
I have no need for faith in my life ... it means nothing to me ....

FIGHT for the ideas of the Enlightenment .... FIGHT for the land of Jefferson, Lincoln and Paine ...

And I dont mean violence: I mean battle and win the day with IDEAS .... the SAME ideas that made this land ....

I believe the notions of the Enlightenment will prevail .... I believe it will because we are determined to make it so, not because we have 'faith' it will be so ...

there'd be a lot less posts of uncertainty such as the OP if people only understood their history better.

8. I would not say you are foolish
I don't have a lot of faith but I hold some hope . It does depend on how old you are because it will certainly take some time to turn this huge mess around . For me at 57 well all of this troubles me , loosing what america appeared to be was not easy and I might not live long enough to see a good outcome .

Now the younger people here can do alot to get people to see what's going on and get them out to vote even if this seems hopeless it is a tool you have to try . Young people have alot to deal with when you add in global warming and the unrest not only in the US but all over the globe . The economy does not look bright either but you can decide to live with just the basic needs and do without the extras , a simple life is better than no life at all .

There are people who will never listen to a thing you have to say but one more with opened eyes does add up .

This is some one person can do but you need many people to shift this into better times .

i wish I had more to offer , but you are not foolish to hope and to try .

10. We have to keep faith
we are what is left of anything patriotic at all. If we give up it will be over. They will have won and we can't ever let that happen.
We are the hope!

13. My European friends
seem to be of the opinion that our country is still a very young country. A lot of the things they've seen our country do in recent times is akin to the growing pains of their countries centuries before. True, we have modern challenges like nukes and global warming, but we also have literacy rates and global communication like never before, too. Call it naivete', but I believe. Tip O'Neil said that all politics is local. If you want to make a difference, let it begin with you, and your small corner of the world. Show by example, rather than by grandstanding, how progressive-thinking and decency is a much more attractive option than fear mongering and regressive-thinking. Reach out to your right-wing neighbors in a way that Rush Limbaugh or some TV hate monger never could. This is what the grassroots is all about, and this is how revolutions and social change come about, too.

17. You've got a decades in power fascist family and their minions
turning the screws on everything decent America stands for. They despise that side of America, always have and have torpedoed the hell out of it. They're playing for keeps. Next step will be complete domination and the iron fist. And nothing is bringing them to a halt. The SS America is sinking and the U-Boats are surfacing victorious. The Bush family is leading the world toward a reckoning of biblical proportion. Just wishing them away and believing all will come right in the end is not going to suffice.

20. It can be tough sometimes to keep faith
but really what other option do we have. Yes, things are mightily screwed up now and probably will be for a long time, so what do we do? We can put our head in the sand or try to do something. Occasionally it's a good thing to unplug from the internet and news for a couple of days to come up for air. Take a walk, go on a picnic, get out and work around the garden or go to a park. We all need to let things cool off in our heads and not get angry or frustrated (and that is incredibly difficult these days). Hang in there....
